I've been lurking around here for about a week. Thanks to the information you guys have provided, I changed my fuel filter ( I could barely blow through it!) and dropped my tank with minimal problems. First thing I found was the float wasn't where it was supposed to be, which probably explains why the fuel guage doesn't work. It was rolling around the bottom of the tank, not floating because it is broken, i.e big chunk missing. I found the pieces and removed them. My only remaining concern is the filter attached to the fuel pump itself. It is very dirty and feels spongy. (Is that normal?) How do I remove it without damaging anything? I want to fix this soon because this is my kayak transport! I can't go fishing till this is done!! Thanks in advance for any help!

Since you have done all the work to drop the tank, I suggest replacing the fuel pump assembly.

That would be the smart thing to do but money is an issue right now. Auto Zone sells the strainer for $8 so I know it comes off, I just can't figure out how! (He didn't know either!)

OK, got everything put back together and believe it or not, it runs! Idle went from 625 to almost 900. Didn't improve the acceleraton much if any but at least I'm headed in the right direction.
