Hello all I am so glad I found this site! I am new to this but I have looked and looked and searched and searched trying to find out how to get the codes out of my sons 's 93 explorer. I have a reader that I use for my 2005 Mountaineer, (OBD 11) but for the life of me I could not find the connector under the dash to save my life. I did read some where that the codes can be retrieved without a reader, but I need some direction please. Can someone tell me where I find the plug to retrieve the trouble codes on a 93 6 cylinder Eddie baurer explorer and how if my newer style reader will hook up to it. (16 pin connector) If I can not use my reader is there a way to retrieve the codes without a reader and if so how can I do that. This is going to be a rebonding project for my son and I and I am looking forward to showing my son the how to's and what nots to do. Thanks a bunch for any and all help.

Have you tried Autozone? They have readers for the older models & do it for free

You have OBDI/EECIV. Your OBDII reader will not work on OBDI. The connector (trapezoid shaped)is under the hood, drivers side, near the firewall. As mentioned above, most AZs will pull the codes for free.

We have three threads in the Under the Hood forum with instruction for pulling codes. You can also put "Ford EEC-IV self-test" into your favorite internet search engine and you'll get plenty of hits (of varying quality).

NEWS: California law apparently now prohibits them from reading codes anymore. Was in a couple of weeks ago and they had to decline a customer who they used to help. Didn't get the details.

This has been law in this wonderful state for over a year now, I was told it has some thing to do with there smog laws and liability. Code readers are so cheap any more I personal will not be with out one. Here at home we have three ob 2 cars and one ob 1 exploder ;-) soon (this summer or fall) we will be adding a ford pick up and the step son is taking over the exploder. I even take my code reader now when car shopping even on dealer lots and have walked away from more then on because of codes and or monitors not reading and they telling me they have done no work to the car or no other reasons for the monitors to have been reset. So to me there cheap and worth more then there cost in trouble shooting and avoiding trouble when car shopping

here in the wonderful state of Michigan (at least up here in the great white north part of it), AZ wont pull codes on NON-OBDII vehicles. but they do sell code readers for older systems.
