I've heard you should pop the shift rail cover off to check the syncros and such. I'm crossing my fingers and bolting mine in. I can have it out in a few hours if things don't go well. Mine's been open before so I'm hoping that's a good sign. I would get the shifter bushing kit. It's cake easy to install out of the truck. Plug the 3 caps behind the shifter. New slave, clutch, and pilot bearing are all good ideas.

I did cycle mine through all gears while spinning the input shaft and they all work smoothly.

It has been a topic on here regarding the slave cylinder. Get a factory replacement motorcraft slave. The other brands may last 50k or may last 5k before the seal blows... read all the horror stories, and went with the motorcraft when I did mine.

My truck is a factory 5 speed, and my clutch kit came from ebay, labeled as an "HD" clutch got it for $75 and the slave cost me $140 shipped from a vendor on here (his screen name is fordsvtparts) the part retails for $190-$210. Anyways I have 17,200 miles on my clutch set, most of it is severe duty (pizza delivery). I would buy this stuff again. Just my 2 cents.

I am going to take the cover off today and check out the inside. I ordered a shift repair kit and the freeze plugs for the shift rail yesterday. So I have a few days to wait. I was going to check the fluids out inside the tranny yesterday, but I am hoping the junk yard was required to drain it before putting it out on the yard because only a few drips came out. The drips that did come out looked like gear oil instead of tranny fluid.

Well, I finally got to take the lid off today. It looks promising. No chunks missing out of the gears. No chunks laying in the bottom of the case. Things inside were still wet with fluid and after taking the top off it looks like they did use tranny fluid after all. A nice bit of red fluid still in the bottom. Guess I'll wait for my parts and put it in and see what happens.

Good show on finding a transmission! I probably should have ordered this shifter bushing kit when I installed mine.

Got my freeze plugs today. Apparently, someone was feeling generous. I got sent three boxes of freeze plugs, ten in a box. Put them in, I was a little nervous about hammering them into an aluminum housing. Went ahead and put fluid in it so I can see if any seals are leaking while I wait another day or two for my shift repair kit. Does anyone know what the torque specs are for the shift rail?

Here is my price list for this swap assuming the tranny is going to work when I finally get it in:

Pull-A-Part:
5speed transmission $65.93
Clutch/Brake pedal assembly $17.00
Manual computer $29.24
Shifter boot $2.44
Steering column cover $6.10
Instrument cluster $24.17

Junk Yard
5speed shifter stick $35.00

Allstate Gear
Shifter repair kit $14.80

Advance Auto
Dorman expansion plugs $2.99
Clutch master cyl.,Slave cyl.,Line assembly $175.99

LMC Truck
Clutch/brake pedal pads $7.90

O'Reilly
Manual starter $124.99
Converter gasket $5.99
Exhaust donut gasket $5.99
Clutch switch $39.99

Autozone
Matched clutch set $133.99
Flywheel $55.99

Throw in about $20 more for various threadlock, rtv, nuts and bolts. For a grand total of $768.50. Some items such as a rubber plug and the manual wiring harness I was not charged for. And to be honest until I wrote this I wasn't sure how much I had actually spent.

I hope it does too. Here is a question for ya, since I am not to familiar with all the workings of a standard. While I still have the tranny out, when spinning the input shaft should the output shaft turn also, whether gear is engaged or not? Just wondering. Also, I got my shift repair kit in and installed today and am ready to bolt it up.

yes it will and should do that

Thanks mr.cribb. Getting down to crunch time and just getting nervous. Hoping the tranny is halfway decent. I'm sure it will probably need a rebuild but I would rather it be later than now.

I wouldn't stress it unless 1 or more gears aren't working. It's not like an automatic dealing with clutches that eventually burn up.

Mine has 218k and climbing, no issues whatsoever. I have driven plenty of high mileage 5 speeds, never had a trans just quit going. Now automatics on the other hand.... a few too many have left me stranded. And my wife wonders why I prefer stick shifts

I've driven a couple of sticks in my life also. Seems like everything else gave out except the tranny. Any time you by something major like a tranny or motor from a "used" parts lot, you always wonder. I noticed something else the other day. The instrument cluster I got out of the 94 Explorer 5 speed only goes 5 digits on the odometer instead of 6 like the one in my 94.

The instrument cluster I got out of the 94 Explorer 5 speed only goes 5 digits on the odometer instead of 6 like the one in my 94.

You only need (for cosmetic purposes only) is the blank from the manual cluster to put in place of the automatic shift indicator.

I put a 6 digit in mine in place of the 5 digit. I ran a history report and found 2 mileage reports on mine, one reading over 100k. So I pulled the whole auto cluster and swapped it, however only the speedo and tach worked from the auto cluster. So I just installed the speedo from the auto cluster and it has worked fine since. I installed the cluster at around 198k, and it reads 218k now.

The speedometer is cable driven so you should only need the blank for the shift indicator. It is very easy, pull the plastic cover from the cluster and there are two screws that hold the blank in place. I find it easier to drop the steering column via the 9/16 nuts, this is after you remove the plastic from under the column and the metal knee buster, 7mm screws (I think), remove the ashtray, then the trim that goes around the radio and a/c controls. (I'm gonna guess you had to do this from the junkyard truck to remove the cluster, if not now you know).

I have pulled mine apart so many times I could do it in my sleep. I never drop the column all the way just enough to get into where I need to be. I have never undone anything else other than the 2 9/16ths nuts holding the column up.

If you have any other questions, just holler I probably know the answer, if not I can find out.

Well i got her in, everything put back together about half an hour ago. Started her up, I think my auto computer was faulty because when it started up that is the best it has sounded since I bought it. Put it in neutral, tried to let out on the clutch but it acted like it was in gear. So I worked my way from first to reverse. Backed it up about 10 feet, moved it forward about 10 feet. Still acted like it was in gear when it was in neutral. Let out on the clutch a little and gunned it and something popped and it was finally in neutral. But, it has a very noticable rubbing or grinding sound in neutral. I stopped before anything such as the clutch or anything got damaged to bad. Anybody got any thoughts?

Just went back out after eating a bite. Started her up and crawled underneath to isolate the sound. It is definately the tranny. You can hear it and by putting your hand on it you can feel it. Sounds like my girls roller skates on the concrete basement floor. Does it with the clutch in or out. 1st and 2nd are very hard to get in gear. 3rd and 4th and reverse are pretty easy. 5th is pretty tight also. Looks like I get to use some rebuild threads and stickies.

Just ordered a rebuild dvd from Southwest Gear. Should get it by the end of the week. When ordering rebuild parts I have noticed that you have to know whether it is 36 or 30 teeth on the 5th/reverse gear. Anyway of telling just by the number on the case? On drivetrain.com you can order parts by using the tranny id number. Mine is f17a-rc.

Finally got my rebuild dvd in from southwestgear.com. Very informative, I have already watched it twice, so I can be familiar with the parts and process. Been busy all week so it's been a slow process of getting the tranny pulled back out.
