Looking for tips and "watch out for" things while dropping the transmission on my truck. Just bought this truck last week and it's in shape as a daily driver if I can get past the "bugs" associated with sitting for awhile.

Tranny leaks like no tomarrow after it's hot. Been doing research and have been told that it's probably the main seal. In process of dropping trans after numerous attempts at band aiding the problem. Currently stuck with the bolts that hold the y-pipe onto the manifolds so I came here to see if that is absolutely necessary to get the trans out.....looks like it is.

So if anybody has anything that'll make this process easier for me, I'd greatly appreciate it! (In general, not the exhaust bolts....torch is on the way)

Thanks!

Nick

Thank you for the information. Found that a little bit ago. Any other tips or watch out for this or that would be appreciated.

While you have it out, check the bushing that the torque converter rides on in the pump. It should be decently snug, and not allow a lot of flopping around. If that is too loose, it will allow too much fluid to jet out towards the seal, and overload the seals ability to keep the ATF inside the transmission.
I was able to drop an A4LD in an Aerostar 4.0 without removing the exhaust pipes, but it involved a bunch of wrestling and maneuvering. Don't lose the pin for the modulator if you have one. If it has a heat shield on the muffler side, make sure you put it back in place as the heat will kill the transmission.

Thanks for the useful tips! I had a '92 Explorer and had to drop the tranny twice for clutches and the first time fought like crazy to get past the y-pipe.....second time took the y-pipe out! I bought a MAPP gas torch at Menards and got two bolts out so far....been busy with the kid and school so haven't had much time to work on it! Plus I think I've spent more time at Sears and Advance Auto than in the garage working on it!

Things r moving forward tho! Back to the fun!:us:;)
