1994 Ford Explorer
Once again I'm here seeking your guidance. Am getting ready to do a auto to manual tranny swap, from an 94 to a 92 Explorer and other then the Tranny/peddles & misc hardware, would like to use all new parts. My concern here, is the year model match when ordering the parts on-line, clutch kit for example, shows 91-92 or 93 to 96. whats the difference between these 2 years and am I going to run into any problems w/ this swap? I was under the impression that these 2-rigs were basically the same, at this point I'm damn sure hoping they are! Probably should have done a bit more research before I purchased the 92, but havent started tearing it down yet. Guess I should mention that the 93 has a bad A4LD tranny, but the rig is a clean XLT w/ 81K miles on it. My 94, that I've had for years, is an XL, 5spd manual trans w/ right at 200k miles, motor is tired, but never had any problems w/ the tranny, never had any problems the rig period, for that matter, which is the reason I purchased another explorer in the 1st place!
Anyway thought I'd better get some advice before I moved further on this project and as always thanks in advance for your responses....

Based on some recent discussions, the 92-93 has a pot-metal slave cylinder while the 93-94 has a ABS or Plastic slave cylinder. Pretty sure they are interchangeable, just true to OE. Looks like weight reduction started a long time ago.

The differences may be as simple as this, don't know.

Everything "should" be the same for 91-94. When I did my swap on my 94, I used the wiring harness from a 93 sport, the tranny from I think an 89 ranger, and misc, bits and pieces from other rangers and explorers. I just kinda searched the junkyard for the best pieces! It should all work for you though, to answer your question! :) Good luck with it!

Thanks guys, thats kinda what I was thinking. Still kind of confused about what clutch kit to order (stage 1-2 or 3) dont know what the difference is, so I guess I'll have to wait until I get the manual trans pulled out of the 94 to see what I got, was just trying to shorten the down time waiting for parts. Again I appreciate the info.
Regards, Jerry

90-94 ranger parts will work and 91-94 explorer parts will work. if your just using it for general driving OEM or stage 1 clutch are the best, if you do a lot of towing or late night drag racing then look into a stage two. but ive never heard of anyone being happy with a stage 3 unless its a "strip only"

Thanks Don, finally figured that out and ordered the OEM kit Yesterday morning. Goin to start tearing down the 92 in the morning, meaning right after I finish clearing enough room in my shop to fit both rigs, and I cant remember the last time that happened...
