Just got a 94 and was wondering if anyone had pictures of the insides of the stock airbox and maf. I was wondering how restrictive is the stock filter, is a cone filter with tubeing really that impresive? or would it be worth making a homebrew setup for cheaper. Any info on the intake/exhaust would be helpfull.

Thanks aj

Diffenetly do a KKM intake. You'll feel the difference. Not sure if anyone does anything special with our 1st Gen. MAFs. You can up-grade the throttle body and do a throttle body spacer. Those are nice.

As for exhaust. Anything not OEM will help. I personally run a Flowmaster 30 series 2 chamber muffler through 2.5". Sounds good and you can feel the difference.

Search around. You'll find tons of info around here.

there are performace tunes of the maf, but unless you have a custom burned computer chip set up for your needs or a runnning a majorly modified engine, you arent going to notice a huge amount of power increase, especially for the $350 pricetag of a maf... $350 is much better spent on a custom chip and a kkm, possibly exhuast as well

Just curious cuz im coming from the audi world, and our 12v a4s have no way of modyfying the chip, but we were installing mafs, hose kits, bored tbs, and fixing up the stock airbox. Since i havent opened up the box yet( going to today) is there any filter/screen over the maf?. Btw i know this should be a different post, but are the best plugs to put in, think they need a change. Im really trying to do as much homebrew style things as possible to keep it cheap and that maf looks* like it could be bored out quite alot, has anyone done this before also what are the biggest bottlenecks of the system?

In my MAF there is a metal screen inside of it.

Steer away from Throttle body spacers on cars with EFI, they will do exactly nothing for you

Spacers are there to make more time for the air and fuel to mix, making a more effecient combustion in the chambers. Well the fuel and air dont mix on EFI until its actually in the chambers... so no point at all to waste money on a spacer.

There are plenty of places to get stuff, ill give ya some links. Personally i think you should get the 66mm throttle body first $220 (garenteed to put some extra ponies under there, worth the money). You can go with the KKM, but its 100 bucks for a filter, JC whitney had the same thing for like 20 bucks, and if you want some *bling* *bling* under there (or you have intake leaks in the stock tubing like me) go with the iFab intake, it comes with Filter and tubing.

Pro-M makes a MAF, but you dont need this right away, i noticed a small difference when i first put it on (mainly sound and freeness in the RPM range) but its not worth the $200 until you get a chip.

The MAF can be bored out a great bit, but the throttle body is probably biggest obstuction on the upper intake line.

But one these cars the biggest bottle neck after the bigger throttle is the lower intake and the cylinder heads. Porting them out is ideal... 30-40+ hp gain ideal.. and since our trucks are pushrods, even the most novice mechanic can do it! i would recommend going to the junk yard and trying it out on a pair of junk ones first, but if you know what you are doing then thats probably the most worth while (for them money, basically free if you have a grinder) mod on our 4.0L

I imagin if you just put a 66mm throttle, ported your own heads and intake, and put hedman headers on there... from 160hp stock, all that alone will get you over 210-220 hp... with the stock cams, and stock chip

thanks for the info wudup. I think ill try and pick up a set from a yard to play with em.

With the position of the intake, the rubber hose running from the stock airbox to the tb seems to be a nice restriction, does anyone make a smooth hose kit or ram air conversion? Im not really a fan of cone intakes is the stock airbox that restrictive>? Also would removing the stock maf screen and replacing it with a velocity stack have any effects? As of now im just looking to get rid of any bottle necks pre- throttlebody.

As i said before i come from an audi where all we could do really was fix the intake trac, so thats were im gonna start.

Any pictures intake related would be very helpful thanks!

The intake tube itself is plastic...only the ends are rubber sleeve pieces. And you're right, the tube is not smooth. There was some debate on this board a long time ago as to whether or not the intake tube was ribbed for STRENGTH or for some other reason.

I think it's just ribbed for strength, and that you could go with a smooth-surfaced intake tube for better air flow into the TB/intake manifold.

There are no ram-air (not to be confused with cold air) kits for the Explorer. But, as always anything is possible to fab if you have the expertise, will, and money.

If you want to reduce the restrictions I'd say get a 66mm throttle body, and open-element filter. I know you don't like open-element filters but it really really helps these trucks, more so than with most other vehicles I've owned. And with 160 hp, your truck needs all the help it can get. If you are worried about dirty oil from an open-element filter, in my experience, I have not had such a problem in 5 years.

If you like fab work then you can make a new intake tube from smooth rubber tubing. I do not recommend using PVC pipe or metal as those materials will heat soak pretty badly.

"a chain is only as stong as its weakest link" and the 'bellowing' plastic elbows or whatever you wanna call it on the stock tubing is what cracked for me. it was predicatble though, and its a tuff spot to try and throw some tape on there or something

but anyway, iFab's setup works pretty good, you can adjust it within the rubber sleves to make it fit right. Im very happy with it. personally though, if i had to do it over again i would go the route of moving the battery and using an intake for a '95 4.0,

that would work right? i havent looked into any specs, but in my head it sounds like a good idea.

You wanna go in this order: intake, exhaust, TB, custom chip. The MAF does nothing for you. Same with the TB spacer and headers. I have first-hand experience with all those parts.

The MAF does nothing for you

I beg to differ

when i put my MAF on, it was actually the first mod i made... stock chip, stock cams, and my 4.0 was running much more freeley in the higher end, it also sounded a little more mean

i didnt put the throttle on until i got the KKM filter and the MAF already on there and that was a definate improvment

but your right, the MAF doesnt do a whole lot until you have Chip/Cams/portedpolished heads/ and an 2.25" exhaust

The MAF was the last thing I did and I noticed nothing. I removed it and felt no difference too, and yes I did reset the computer.

i didnt even reset the computer haha
