I have bought a 94 xlt 2wd x i paid 700 for it great body no dents no chipped paint interior is just as great. the only problem is the trans is shot. The story behind it is the previous owner was drivin it and all of a sudden the truck wouldn't pull itself so they get it home and park it since 07 well I wrecked my truck and i thought I would use the 2wd as a parts donor but the engine runs perfect compression is right. I figured I'd fix it for a family vehicle, and use mine as a play toy lol. Anyways back to the topic I checked the trans fluid and the fluid is burnt and a greyish color, with the truck running and changing gears you can't feel it shift into the gear. Any ideas of what is actually goin on? I have a tranmission shop lined up but if I can fix it myself and save some money then is rather do that. Sorry for the length thanks for the advice

Burnt grey fluid and it won't engage into a gear? Well I'd have to say it sounds like your trans is shot. These A4LD's are one of the weakest parts in the Explorer's drive train. If you are having to pull the trans, you may want to think about upgrading to a stronger one, like the M5OD. It's a 5 speed manual and requires very little modding to swap it in.

shot tranny.. get it rebuilt.

is there a better auto trans that will work and how hard would it be to rebuild the a4ld by myself? and special tools needed?
