1994 Explorer XLT
Hey-

I have an automatic 1994 Explorer XLT (4x4) with about 111,000 miles on it. In the past few weeks my explorer has not started as quickly as it used to in the AM. It generally starts but occasionally I will have to try twice. The second time it starts up no problem. At any other time during the day it starts up no problem.

Recently, as in yesterday and the day before, I start it in the AM, am driving down the street and after about half a mile the car will shut off and I will coast to a stop. There is no sputtering or noises, everything just shuts off. The first time it happened I remember seeing a yellow battery light and the second time I remember seeing a red battery light. That is not to say they were both illuminated both times. I turn the key after I get to a stop and it starts up no problem. It sits over night for about 12 hours.

The first time this happened (prior to the above mentioned) was after a storm and I had to drive through standing water. I went through the water and about 10miles later it cut out. It did not start immediately afterwards, but after a couple tries it was fine. Three days or so went by before the above 2 day in a row cut off happened.

I would really appreciate any help I can get. I live in Northern Virginia and traffic is really awful. I would hate to have my car just stop in the middle of the road and block THOUSANDS of angry people.

I'm not a mechanic, but based on your description it sounds like there is moisture trapped somewhere. Did you check the battery and cables? Could be that your cables just need to be snugged down on the terminals, or battery is getting old. Best of luck.

I checked the battery connections and generally everywhere else in the engine each day I had an issue. The connections were fine and I could not locate any moisture. I keep the explorer outside each night but I honestly believe after a few days and hot summer driving conditions it would dry out.
