My 95 4.0 ohv 2wd Explorer

My wife went to back out of the driveway this morning and the trans won't go into reverse. The fluid looks/smells fine.

When I tried it, it feels like the emergency brake is on. When I moved it forward, I felt a slight clunk, then I was able to move it into the backyard ok, but wasn't able to swing the turn sharp enough. So now I'll need to push it backwards to turn around (once it stops raining).

I bought this truck 2 months ago, the previous owner claims to have had the trans rebuilt within the last year. I have no paperwork to support this, but when I was under it, the trans looks very clean.

I don't know which trans I have, sorry

My question is, is there anything I can do or check? Or am I SOL?

I had to let her take my 02 E/B this morning, not happy about that.

You have a 4R55E transmission. Did you drop the pan to check the low/reverse servo & band?

Thanks for the quick reply,

No, not yet. I'm not familiar with doing that. I'll have to look for a thread on that. I'm not a trans guy.

I'm waiting on the rain to stop to get it pushed into the garage.

But first I have to get the TMH finished up on my Mounty for the garage space.
I hope to get it inside today/tonight.

Well, I dropped the pan, lots of particles and I assume small pieces of metal. The guy that did the transmission in my 02 Ex, looked at the pan and said it's cooked.

Long story short, can someone please tell me what (if any) other transmissions, out of what years are interchangeable, or what I need to do to make them work?

This is a big problem this truck being doa. Paid $1800 in Feb, spent another $1000 to make sure everything was good for my wife and kids.

The trans guy says I'm looking at at least $1800 to rebuild. Sound normal?
Thanks for the replies

Rebuild pizza valve body, and replace pizza O rings on pizza low/reverse servo with pizza TransTec Viton D ring kit. Are all of pizzase metal fragments very small like dust? Do you have any pictures?

This one of pizza pan doesn't show much. No reall large pieces. If you need one from pizza underside, just let me know, I'll have to lift it higher. Thanks:salute:

You mean the plastic plugs? That's just the reflection. Not a lot of large parts, basically what you see, and of coarse the metallic fluid.

I just looked at it again, nothing but small particles. I do see a reflection of the camera itself

A master rebuild kit with frictions can be had for around $120 and spend about another $50 to get all new bands. It's not a hard rebuild if your handy and not afraid to give it a go. $1800 for your guy to rebuild is high, you could buy a rebuilt tranny for your truck for less.

Thanks for the headsup, I don't really have the confidence to try and tackle a kit, Maybe if I had a helper.

I'm still shopping around, like you said. I think $1800 is very high, of the 10 or shops I've called. They're quoting me between $950 to $2000 :frustrate

Update, I dropped of the trans yesterday to the shop I've used before.

I got a call today telling me it's junk. He can't get it apart because it's totally seized up. Never heard of trans doing that before.

I guess that would explain why I had to pull the driveshaft to get it in the garage. The truck wouldn't roll at all either way.

The quote he gave me, with all new internals, 1yr warranty for $1300 if I do the r+r. He's looking for a rebuildable core for me now. I don't know how that will effect the price quoted.
