I want over to dad's today to fix a leaky tranny line, and found transfer case troubles.

Since I bought the truck 5 years ago, I have used it as a backup only and only put about 10k miles on it. But ever since I bought it, it has had a slight rumble under the drivers floorboard at highway speeds.

Several times, when I've been under it, I've checked the transfer case for leaks and fluid level and it was fine, so I pretty much ignored it, and drove under the speed it started making noise. Then it got parked 2 years ago and hardly moved since then.

After it was parked, I happened to be driving a 4wd work truck that had the same issue, but it being a work truck, they won't fix it till it's visible broke. So I was driving the truck when the transfer case fragged, at highway speed, during rush hour, on the tappan-zee bridge. SWEEEET!!!

Fast forward to now. I pulled the truck out of storage, replaced all the rusted p/s and brake lines.

Today, when travelling to dad's I hit highway speeds and had a flashback the the work truck, so I was determined to figure out wht the t-case was making the noise, and found slop in both the front and rear driveshaft yokes. I can move them up and down enough by hand to see the movement by eye.

The question is, replace or rebuild? Or is it even rebuildable? I know some of this stuff is disposable.

Is it rebuildable, and if so, how long of a project is it to do? (this is my main transportation now, so down-time is an issue)

I looked on ebay, there were several, how interchangeable are they? There's one at a local junkyard for about $200, from a 97 ranger and they say it fits 95-97. Yet in two thread here, one says the 95 were different than the 96-97, and another says they're the same.

Any solid answers?

Thanks,
Dave

Ok, I found the 4405 rebuild thread, it is obviously outside of my capabilities due to lack of tools/time.

The other question still stands, how compatible are the 95-97 years..
