Hi everyone....I'm new here. My husband has a 1995 Explorer Sport 4.0 V6 2wd with a manual transmission. The fourth gear broke the other day while I was coasting in 4th gear on the freeway. All the other gears work fine (at least at this time!). I'm trying to research where, and how much, to buy a rebuilt tranny, basically to see if it's worth it to keep this car alive. He loves it though, even at 163k. Doesn't drive it much anymore but it's starting to have things go wrong.

So how do I go about finding out the actual type of tranny this has? My ex-Ford-dealer bro-in-law says it's made by Mazda. My mechanic doesn't think that a Ranger or Mazda tranny is the same as the Explorer, but I think it is.

Thanks for any help you can give us!

It's most likely the Mazda transmission. I had one totally rebuilt for about $1400 several years ago. If you don't want to spend that kind of $ on a rebuild, you could always get one from a junkyard and have it installed.

I think it is the M5OD and it is a Mazda design.

Thanks guys!

D (1992-1996) M5OD-R1
J M5OD-R1

So, it looks like I have the M5OD-R1! Fabulous.....now I can get the right info on how costly this fix should be.

Thanks again, everyone!
