Lost the clutch on my drive home. Pedal got really hard then something blew and now pedal is just dead.
Towed it home and took a look. Not sure what slave is supposed to look like but does not look good.
Is this a dead slave?

The slave is by far the most common failure point on the M5OD.
Is the reservoir empty?

yup spit all the fluid on the ground when it died.
i filled it back up and tried to get the pedal to come back to life, if only to see where it leaked fluid but i could not get anything out of the pedal.
i will try and bleed it but i dont have much hope.
it had a slow leak that required topping the fluid off 2/3 times a year so i knew it was on its last legs

time to get the clutch/slave replaced i guess.

Just sayin' from a guy that's had this done twice in 218,000 miles ;)

Short story, when replacing hydraulic components on this particular system, you need to replace BOTH the master and the slave.

Both components are plastic and should be considered "throwaways".

If you replace only 1 component, the other old & worn component will not allow the clutch to release.

Moving on, given the mount of work and heavy duty trans jack required to separate and suspend the transmission/transfer case assembly,
I bought all my LUK brand parts from Rock Auto, and found an independent shop to remove & replace for $500 flat fee.

Best $500 spent, ever... Trust me... BOTH times the tech, who has a lift and proper heavy duty transmission jack that reaches up 7 feet up, told me each time he couldn't believe how heavy the trans/transfer case assembly was...

To take this into perspective, I do ALL the work on my EX, BUT, this is the ONLY JOB I sub out. You've been warned!

OK - Factory parts are Valeo brand.

From Rock Auto, buy LUK Brand components; Slave & Master cylinder, Pilot and Throw out bearing, flywheel, clutch plate, pressure plate.
The trans shop would only guarantee their work if I brought them LUK or Factory ($$$$$) components.

PS - DO NOT have the factory flywheel ground, but rather replace it. If you grind it there will be too much travel on the pressure plate fingers, and you will get clutch squeal in 1st on flat ground, as well as when you engage the clutch on a grade.

Hope that helps -

Interesting.

I've replaced individual ends of the clutch hydraulics and had the flywheel turned with none of those issues.

^^^^^ Send all complaints to @fastpakr if you choose his method :)

@fast_dave
thanks for the advice, this was my plan to hire it out as i have pulled and rebuilt the a4ld on my 94 but was not looking forward to doing it again, even though it looks like the m5od is lighter and would hang up on less stuff(dam y pipe still gives me nightmares), i did not know to replace both slave and master but the master would be easier to replace later.

i will call my mechanic and see what his thoughts are.

For what it's worth, I also can't remember a single comment about issues after turning a flywheel or replacing a slave cylinder in the last twenty years at TRS...

Just sayin'

You can buy both LUK Brand high quality hydraulic components from Rock Auto at a very discounted price for LUK

VS

1st Buying a chi-com Slave Cylinder from an auto parts store, only to find out that you will have to now go back and buy a chi-com Master Cylinder.

I imagine if that if you mechanic is well grounded, and doesn't like trying to hit a goal twice, he'll suggest buying both components at the same time - but your mileage may vary :)

Note that I didn't say -anything- about buying cheap components. That was somehow inferred magically from things I never said. Is it not possible to have a difference of opinion without projecting ideas on the other party in the conversation?

No intention of trying to tell anyone how to do their business but I order the parts I need online to save a lot of money, Rock Auto is hard to beat if you need to save money like me and I have a local Garage install them and they do fantastic work. Some Garages order the same parts but charge way more than you would pay if you ordered them yourself, in the end it's your choice though. Good luck, hope you're back up and running soon!
