96 Ranger with a 3.0L. Transmission slips in reverse.

Thank you for your interest....
I have a 96 ranger,3.0... Tranny will not go into rev. w/o being warmed up... three minutes....o/D lights flashes, engine bucks and runs verrry rough...Restarting will solve prob... Dealer wants to install new tranny,yet wont tell me what code came up.. i''m apprehensive..Tranny has been "slipping" since 40,000 miles,now has 100,000..sometimes bangs into high gear... Slippage is getting worse... Have been told there is an elec. switch in tranny...?? Cold N.Y. winters make it worse.. Sadly have little money to invest, yet need my truck to be dependable... Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated...
