'96 sport Trany problems

I have a '96 sport with an automatic transmision, one day i was driving and it would not shift out of 1st gear. When i let it rev up then let go of the gas it ***** into 2nd gear then works fine. Some times the O/D light comes on and the check engine light is on. Any ideas?

Any problems with the speedometer? This transmission uses the speedometer speed sensor to tell it when to shift. Engine problems can also cause this as well as TPS problems. Start with getting the engine codes read.

There does not seem to have problems with the speedometer. I got the engine code read at Auto zone but they said it was a code they don't have and I have to go to a dealer to get it.
