i got my x in february and in the beginning of april i seized my transfer case and it in turn snapped my output shaft on the tranny i bought the 400 dollar output shaft and had one of my dads friend who works at a tranny place put it in....and i found a new to me transfer case for 300....now only a few months later when i let off the gas completely it makes a jerk i can feel and when i put my foot on the gas again it jerks again....my first was the universal joints .... i just put on a pack of leafs off a ranger that bolted up perfect...i dont think it has anything to do with it tho...also when in reverse there is a clicking that sounds like loud popcorn underneath.....if the u joints are bad should i be able to movethe drive shaft back and forth with my hands a little?

u-joints should have no freeplay at all, if they are good.
my old explorer did this because my pinion bearing was gone in the rear axle. try to push the driveshaft up and down, and see if it moves at all where it meets up with the rear axle. if it does, that could be the problem.

not to hijack your thread, but what year/model ranger did you swap leaf springs out of? i am in desperate need to replacing my rear leafs in my explorer, and i have a 97 4x4 ranger that is a parts truck that i was considering stealing the leaf springs out of. think they will work?

i would look at the u joints and rear diff

My friend had 2 87 parts rangers i stole the leafs from one of the two....what i did was just measure the length from the middle of the bolt on one perch to the middle of the bolt on the second perch.....if theyre close you move on with a couple more measurements which are from themiddle of the front perch bolt to the middle of the axle and from the back perch bolt to the middle of the axle if thes measurements line up i would at least try to swap a side and if it didnt work it didnt work......
