Hi Guys,

I have a 96x that seems to be "locked" into 4wd at the transfer case... after reading the threads about the brown wire mod it appears to me that when the switch is in 2wd that there shoud not be any power going to the front driveshaft from the transfer case.

Is this correct? if so has anybody else had this problem and know what the likley cause is?

I also read somthing about if there is play comming out of the yoke for the rear driveshaft at the transfer case, that it could bind up the clutch for the front shaft.

would an 16th of a inch of play be to much? and wouldn't the switch on the dash read 4wd if the clutch was locked in or does the the light on the dash mearly run off the switch?

I would appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Thanks, Mike N.

You have a 96. The brown wire mod does not apply to your truck. In regards to your problems not being able to keep it in 2WD, did your 4x4 lights flash at all? I suspect your having some sort of issue with the control trac transfer case. You can try disconnecting the battery to see if that will help your situation. You can also try disconnect the shift motor and try to manually turn the transfer case.

Yea I know.... I should not have to do the brown wire mod on the 96x because it has a switch on the dash to put it into 2wd... But I need to know if there is suppose to be power comming to the front drive shaft in the 2wd mode with the way the computer is programed for the 96s?

The front half axels are not under power in 2wd due to the vaccume motor on the passenger side of the front axle (I guess)

I am trying to diagnose a vibration comming from under the drivers seat at highway speeds (Just so you guys know) It is still present when the front driveshaft is removed

I have tried to disconnect the battery....no luck :(

The lights are not blinking in the dash, but they will when you un-plug the harness ( I suppose this is normal )

I have tried to shift the transfer case mannualy, The triangled rod behind the shift motor moves freely from H to N to L but does not "click" into place... The motor does a fine job of shifting into and out of low.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Mike N.
