Okie, here it goes.
Hello folks, I have a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0 V8 AWD(explorer)

1) During cold morning start up, with windows down, the engine hisses, ticks and knocks. The noise would go away after a min or two. The knocking noise sounds like a diesel engine at idle, ticking noise sounds like fast belt slapping, and hissing noise sounds like air coming out around the engine. It was just slight ticking noise in the beginning, but when the weather got colder, it started to knock and hiss.

2) After 1500 after the first oil change, I noticed no oil on the dipstick. It took 3 qts of oil to get the right reading. After taking it to local mercury dealer, they put me on an oil consumption test. Arond 800 miles, it ate up about 3/4 inch of oil. The dealer said its normal.

3) The transmission thumps very often. Especially when you are slowly picking up speed and let go of the gas pedal, the truck thumps. Sometimes when you try to come to a full stop, the gear would thump from 2nd to 1st. The gear also kicks in hard when you are shifting from park to drive and/or reverse.

4) Sometimes there is foul order when the heater is on. It quickly dries up my nose and I can feel a bit of burning sensation in my nostril and throat.

5) The vehicle does about 11-12 mpg.

I've know few people that owns explorers/mountaineers with awd and I even drove one explorer xlt(EB), one mountaineer awd, and bronco xlt but I do not see them happing on their vehicle.
I am very proud of this vehicle. It is loaded, handles very nicely, mucho power, soft ride, and it is very easy to drive. I always take care of my vehicle by doing frequent regular maintenance. I just don’t want the vehicle to get any worst. Even worst, I don’t want the vehicle to go bad on me right after the warranty is up.

There! That took me forever. Please help. What am I to do now?
tia.

SORRY PAL BUT FORD V6 4.0L SOHC Y BETTER THAN
V8 5.0L.

SOME REVIEWS SHOWS HOW THE FORD EXPLORER V8 5.0L HAS THE WORST GAS MILEAGE OF ALMOST ALL SPORT UTILITIES.

BAD CHOICE

I SUGGEST YOU TO CHANGE YOUR SPARK PLUG WIRES (NOLOGY IS THE BEST CHOICE IF BUDGET IS NOT A PROBLEM), TRY THE NEW BOSCH +4 SPARK PLUGS AND CHANGE THE OEM AIR FILTER WITH A KKM (TRUE REV) OR THE NEW K&N AIR GENERATION II AIR FILTER.

AND CONSIDER THE SUPERCHIP AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO ENHANCE YOUR PERFORMANCE.

GREETINGS

I have to say something is screwed up big time! I would almost say you might want to take it in to a car shop that is not dealer related and see what they say. My mom has a 97 AWD 5.0 Explorer and it drives very nice, no thunkin or anything like that.

I would say that as far as the MPG go for these V8's its all relative, on the stickers for them the SOCH 4.0l makes 1 mpg better then the V8. I know my mom's probably gets about 15-19mpg depending on the conditions. That is the same as my OHV 4.0 with my 33's and 4.56's! Plus if you really wanted to get creative you could probably turn the V8 one into one neet off-roading machine!

My 2 Cents.

I'd say that your #1 & #2 are related. The ticking is your hydraulic lifters not having enough oil at start up. Not sure on the hissing/slapping sound though...

How does an engine use 3/4 of an inch of oil? I'm not following your units of measurement here... But roller 302's are not known for oil consumption unless somebody had gotten that sucker really hot.

The trans problem could be any number of things, including u-joints or a sloppy differential.

The foul odor is an indication of a bad heater core. Do you get any sort of film on your windshield?

As for the gas mileage, that is usually one of 2 things: O2 sensors or EGR. Do you have a check engine light?

I would really suggest you take your truck to another shop, as the dealer (at least from what you are telling me...) is not up to the task. Not all shops are created equal; some have idiots working there, some have actual competent mechanics.

Did you buy this vehicle new or used? How many miles are on it?

why would you say this? Especially considering you recently asked for imput on which engine is "best." Because you want an anemic, underpowered vehicle that is not capable of towing, much less of getting out of its own way? THe 5.0 should have been the standard in the Explorer, in fact it would have been much better off with the 5.8 (351) as an option. Anyone familiar with Ford trucks would realize this...

As for what Mr. Gomez has stated, it would seem he has read one too many advertisements as none of his "solutions" would have any effect on your problems. In fact, most engine builders would steer you away from the products he mentioned as a waste of hard earned money. No flames, just facts here.

Where are you located? I would like to lend you a hand. Feel free to drop me an email and I'll try and help the best I can.

Good luck, Thye
