1997 explorer
Hello All,

I have a 1997 explorer 4x4 with 160,000 miles. The problem I'm having is it will not go into drive unless I hold at 3000 rpm. Then it bangs into gear. Once it's into drive it seems to go just fine. Shifting though all gears. If I try to start out in manual 1 or 2 it does the same thing. Like a stall converter. Once it's in drive I can even power brake it and squeal tires. Reverse is a little sluggish on cold starts ,but drive always is the same rev it up a few times and bang it slams into drive and away we go.

Any help or direction would be appreciated.

Thanks

After posting. I went ahead and pulled explorer up on my lift. I pulled pan and noticed fluid was dark ,but not as bad as I have seem before. Smelled a little burned but not fried.

I then checked bottom of pan for any nasties and all I found was the usual friction material goo, but no metal chunks. So I went ahead and ohmed all solenoid and they seem to check ok.

I'm this far and still no reply so I go ahead and make a template for valve body bolts and proceed to remove VB to check gaskets. Still no sign of trouble gaskets were all intact.

Now what? I probably should have done a line pressure test, but I didn't .

Any help guys. Looks like I'm gonna end up rebuilding this POS. still would like to know what to look fo

Line and EPC pressure would have been good to check. You may have a bad one way clutch. Requires tear down to fix.

Thanks for the reply. Coulda woulda shoulda. That's my life story.

Why would it all of a sudden grab when revving it up. If one way clutch is bad wouldn't it be worse when increasing the revs and torque on it.

Thanks

It could also be the forward clutch, when you rev it up the clutch disks heat up and grab, eventually they will weld together and everything will only go forward including neutral.
