I'm seriously looking at a 1997 Explorer, 4 Door with what I think is a bad trans, it only moves backwards. It's a V6, probably a SOHC, guy is asking $400 obo and I'm gonna shoot for $250. It's a rather nice looking truck. What's the deal on it only moving backwards though before I run head on into a mistake?

I would go for it; then put a bottle 32oz large one, of Trans X in tranny; it do work miracles sometimes. Heck if you get it for $250 even if you do have to replace tranny, sounds like a deal to me if motor and suspension are ok and all electrics work inside.

It's got a dent on the right front fender from what appears to be a deer, it's also got the typical roof paint issue. It's gray though, which is odd to me. I'm tempted to go see it, despite having a 99 Mounty, 2000 and 2001 Explorers just hanging out here. Vehicles are gravitating towards me anymore.

So I've asked the buyer about it, I thought about it and decided "Heck if it's 4WD this is worth it if I land at $300ish". If it's 2WD I'm definitely not, since as someone who sold a 2WD truck as run and drive for $1K a year ago yesterday, that was four years newer, it's not worth the effort. If it's a 4WD though, it's much more desirable.

I don't care too much either way to be honest, I've seen so many come and go this one's main attraction is it being gray.
