My A4LD rebuild (no Forward only Reverse)

Yeah, happy to be towards the end of te rebuild.

I've got all the guts in the case, just need to rebuild the the Valve Body and get it back on the Truck.

I was thinking about reusing the Torque Converter (since this started out as a "get it back on the road" rebuild but then morphed into a painted trans with most of the "bulletproof" upgrades), AND since I didn't have any metal in the pan... but at 220,000 and not knowing if all those miles are one this TC, The $175 for a new one makes sense.

Any recommendations? I have a $40 off a >$100 purchase at Advance Auto Parts, so I may go that route...

Thanks!

I would replace it, your this far into it. Peace of mind if nothing else. But with those miles, i'd say the torque converter clutch wouldn't be as strong as it once was. I'm looking forward to digging into my dads after seeing all this!

Got my *last* parts today. A double lip seal for the reverse servo and the transgo VB kit.

Hopefully I'll get the Valve Body done tomorrow. :-)

Is this the newer style solenoid, or just an aftermarket? (no screen)

The updated solenoid has no screen.

Cool, that's what I thought.

I decided to go ahead a do the Sonnax Booster Valve upgrade. So a couple more days wait for the last last parts.

You know it!

Found my flexplate spacer is cracked so I'll have to get one of those comeing as well.

Now I can get the Valve body finished up (needed the 5th ball) then move to under the truck and get the spacer put in. I also need to do my Radial Arm Bushings, so I'll do those while Im down there. hoping it'll actually make getting the trans up a bit easier with the RAB bracket out of the way.

Valve body is done. Took a ton of pics.

So Clean

Replaced the broken flex plate adapter over the weekend.

Surprised by how clean the back end looked. (relatively)

Nice write up.

Looks like youv'e done some real nice work here

After a crazy winter (thats not quite over yet it seems) I hope to get the trans back in my ex this weekend. 50-60 degree weather so I got to take advantage of it!

Great thread, I will be using this to guide me through my rebuild. I have the same issue. I have forward but have to rev the engine for it to engage, more recently, after it engages I have to drop it down to low and get it rolling then manually upshift as I'm driving. Stays in gear nicely and shifts until I come to a stop, then I have to drop it back down to 2 to get it rolling again.
Just contemplating on what parts and/or kits I need to get. Pretty confident I could do it, although I have no experience with transmissions at all. I did already install the Transgo Jr kit in the valve body.
Keep us posted if this fixed your problem.
I'm in KS so I need to take advantage of this weather myself. Thx

Does anyone have a reference to the bolt length for the bellhousing to engine bolts? I must admit I was not very organized when I pulled out the trans.:(

Looks like I've got 2 lengths....

Thanks,
-Charles

Just pulled mine off about an hour ago , they were all the same length.
