My A4LD rebuild (no Forward only Reverse)

Also, would anyone happen to have a pump alignment tool I could barrow? I'll need one before too long... hopefully :)

Cool, Yeah Transtar wants $65 for a used OD, their shell with locking tabs is $23 and they have it local, so I may just bite the bullet and go pick them both up. I'll for sure get the shell. (and then I can at least get assembly done to the center support.)

Took a scooter ride on my lunch break to pick up the drum and shell. Got the shell but the drum was a 2 disc from a 4r55 and the star washer lugs were a little more worn the I thought it should be for a $65 drum.

Putting the forward shell assembly together.

Going through my thrust washer set I came across one that goes in the direct drum.

I know mine didn't have this washer, but I also know my trans was rebuilt by the previous owner (shop) so I'm wondering if they left it out. Seems like it makes sense to be there, but maybe with the bearing on the snout of the center support its not needed...

Any thoughts?

Thank you. :-)

With your 4R55E being electronically controlled, I'd bet it's more sensitive to debris in the fluid (ala washer shavings) I know that the electric servos apply less pressure.
But yeah. I iminge that too much movement of parts is going to mess up the oil paths.

That thrust washer is not used when you have a snap shell.

Good to know, Thanks JK080!

Im going to show all the parts I have in my Forward/Shell assembly, reasons are 2 fold; one is that Glacier's threads dont show any of its assembly, the other so I can make sure that I've got all the parts needed.

All the Parts laid out:

Start with your rebuilt Direct drum.

The Forward drum sits inside that (the #5 bearing holds it off the drum)

(Be sure to replace those ring seals with new ones from your kit)

Next is #6 Bearing

Then the Ring Gear

hold that bushing in place when lowering it in

Next is #7 Bearing

Then the Planetary

Finally the Shell with sun gear

9582472261_3699ab7581_c.jpg

There is a bearing in the Planetary that supports the sun gear and holds the shell off the planetary.

Push the shell down to lock in the tabs

Look like I got everything JK080?

Looking good!

Looks real good so far

Thanks :)

Going to start putting the guts back in tonight. very excited to be to the point of putting parts in instead of pulling them out.

If you are following Glacier991 how to thread on the reassembly please note that he has the pump gasket wrong...

It should go between the pump plate and case not the pump plate to bellhousing. I think the way he has it it must have created a cross leaks in the pump and maybe problems with main line pressure.

Thanks, its reassuring to know I have a second set of eyes looking over my shoulder. :)

I was at my local trans shop today at lunch break, to pick up the 'last part I need' and asked them if they could align my pump if I brought it in, the guy asked his assembler and he said no problem. Even if they charge me a few bucks it'll be worth it (though I got the impression they'd just do it for all the parts I've gotten from them)

First part back IN the case.

Feels good. :)

JK, what do you make of this, seems like there is more slop then there should be, what keep that drum from grinding on the center support? (can hear it at the beginning of the vid)

I have #5 bearing on the snout of the center support.

Not sure what is going on there, I have never really stacked that up like that on top of the center support. Try standing it on the sun gear and setting the support on top and check for clearance between the support and drum, maybe smear some grease on the drum to check for contact with the support.

The #5 bearing is how to adjust rear gear train endplay on that particular type of A4LD. So there is no bearing between the support and drum and the snap shell should keep the drum off the support. Also you might want to set the new shell next to the old one just to check for a height difference because you did replace the shell, but I know of only one shell for that one.

gravity is definitely pulling the shell down, if I sit ing the other way the center spins without a sound, i just wonder what stops it from touching when its sitting horizontal in the Ex

Drilled out the Drain Back hole to 5/16" on the bellhousing and the pump.

Found an issue with the new Oil Damn that came in the Thrust washer kit when I was checking read end play. The lip on the new damn is way thicker then the old one.

You can see how its sticking up proud of the thrust washer. I just went with the old.

GOOD NEWS: I got my pump aligned today (after checking the front end play) AllStar Transmission in Denver (local) did it for me, awesome dudes. They have a ton of used parts to pick from (they rebuild. Have the place is a shop the other is a wherehouse)

After bringing it home I got it clean, primed and painted.
