Great forum!!

I'm looking for some help, we have the above model explorer and it's started to judder and shake under braking so I'm reasonably sure that the rotors and pads need replacing. I've replaced many disks and pads over the years, on other vehicles, but these seem very different so I thought it might be best to get them done at my local brake centre.

They've estimated that the cost will be $280.00, which seems very expensive, is this normal?

I would try it myself but don't really know where to start, any help would be very gratefully recieved.

Thanks

Alex

It is pretty straight forward if you have done disc brakes before--

For the front, you should be able to do it yourself for less than half the estimate--buy good pads and rotors--

I'm moving this to the stock 95-01 forum

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, I've just posted it over in the other forum too, I posted it here by accident. Sorry.

Its a very easy job. I did it last weekend and it only took me about 30 min a side. Just make sure you buy new wheel bearings while your at it.

Jack up truck and support it on jack stands.
Remove wheels.
Undo the two bolts holding caliper on.
Undo two bolts holding the caliper bracket on.
Remove bearing grease cap from front rotor.
Remove cotter pin and spindle nut, and outer bearing.
Then the rotor should just slide right off.

Installation is just reverse of removal. Make sure you grease the bearings well with some good synthetic grease. If you have any question feel free to pm me and ill help you as much as i can.

Hi Carlover,

Thanks for the reply I really appreciate your help, I think I'll have a go myself. So I just need to buy the bearings, pads, grease and rotors? is that correct? Do you have any idea what the part numbers are? sorry to be a pain but once I start I have no transport to get back to the shop to buy or change anything

Thanks also for the offer of help, I think I may need it!!

I did this job myself on a 98 2wd 5.0 a month or so ago - my first brake job, no problems.

I used the cheapest rotors from Advance Auto Parts, and Wearever Silver pads. If you get cheap pads, visually inspect them before you leave the store - on one set of front pads, the rectangular protrusions which ride in a channel on the caliper anchor plate were very poorly cast (corners were warped), and wouldn't fit. I had to return them and get a different set.

Hope this helps.
