'98 Explorer - Where To Get Trans Case Shift Motor 'adaptor' for Towing ?

Yup, maybe so.
No, too easy that way :)
I do recall under the seat. But I'd rather disconnect it at the TC if possible to test at least.

Kids these days don’t even want to drive, period.

One of my nephews wants a car. The others could care less. He sent me a link to a 2001 Miata he wants. Has an automatic. I told him you don’t buy a sports car with an auto—even though Miata and sports car is a stretch. I told him to buy a stick. A what? A manual trans. What’s that?

It’s time to leave this planet.

lol - true ! I heard this weekend that some folks with teslas have a device to fool the PC to think their hand's on the wheel, then go back and go to sleep !
More funny stories.
My Son, at 23, knows exactly how to shift a stick as he was riding a dirt bike at 10, or was it 9 ? Later on I put him on a CR125, with me on a 96 CR250, and he was GOOD. His problem was that he didn't take it slowly enough, and kept crashing. He thought he was going to be Ricky Carmichael in 2 weeks.
You know what I find funny ? That 4WD's are better to be automatics, as the fluid trans gives the whole drivetrain some give.
I've been in the electronics business (BSEE, Networks, etc) my whole life and there's no reason to shift electronically.
The best automatic I've ever driven was the 1964 Pontiac dual-coupling 4 speed auto, with R all the way to the R. I had that in back of a 421, a good engine except they have small connecting rod bolts, and they tend to fall apart at 140 or so. If only I had asked my Dad, they raced, and already knew that.

BTW, back to the Exploder, how many computers does it have, and how many will it take to fix all the electronic gremlins ?
Also, can whatever computer be reflashed IN the car or OUT ?

Naw, there will be no computers replaced in this, period, for any reason. Remember? You stated at least 10 times you don’t need them.

lol - "obviously you were mistaken" !!! Matrix. The gotcha is the reg tranny won't shift. I could probably hot wire that too, but then I'm reinventing the computer with all the inputs, etc. You know, now that I think of it, it can't be that difficult to build a Explorer PC from scratch. There's got to be less than a dozen inputs and outputs. Back when I was 18, I was going to invent a security system, for a car, to put in line with the coil. It would have 8 switches, and it all the switches weren't in the right position, the car won't run. It would all be in a metal box. So if the thief doesn't show up with a coil of their own, forget it.

PCM generally controls the trans. The GEM has purview over the transfer case/4x4.

Any codes stored?

Oh boy, 2 computers...more bad news. I think we can do w/o the TC PC, but not the reg trans.
No codes as it has been a spare vehicle, and been sitting on/off for 2 years since it got screwed up due to the key. I found out it was reprogrammed back when the orig key was lost.
I might be able to get codes, but I really need to disconnect the 4wd 1st.

Planning to run one of these vehicles without a GEM is a terrible idea. Nothing electronic in the truck is going to work properly without serious modification.

Your customer is better off getting rid of the vehicle. There is no way this is going to be cost effective

He doesn't care if the windows or wipers work, we can hotwire those anyways. Why would anyone in their 'right mind' depend on a computer for the windows to go up and down ? A product without a purpose. A lot of that in America.

That’s literally how every car has worked for decades. “We can reinvent everything” is a ridiculous stance to take. Is your time not worth anything? My time is far too valuable trying to reinvent a crappier wheel. If he’s too cheap to buy a computer to fix the car he’s too cheap to have a car.

By your own logic, why not just ride horse? My grandfather once said, “hey did you notice all the car repair shops pop up right after they started making automobiles?” And he was right. Before something was made there were no service stations for that item.

If he wants the opposite of everything automatic, that’s called walking.

I’ve always wanted to carb a 4.0 ohv the parts are available
Then you can run a 5 speed manual trans and a manual t case

almost there
Next would just be the ignition switch and neutral safety
The speedometer and instrument cluster are still sort of electronic but no computers

I wish I could put a C-4 behind a 4.0 SOHC...

You can just have to use the c5 bellhousing

Ranger dudes in the desert have been doing this for years

Then you can carb the old sohc engine and the c5 can be fitted with a reverse manual
Valve body makes for one quick desert truck

I wasn't aware that there was a C-5 bellhousing to fit a 4.0. I thought that a PINTO with a 4.0 SOHC would be a little "screamer". Forgive me for going off topic. I have to head out to work...

Gotta fit a distributor
Tom Morana makes a 4.0 carb adapter for the intake, otherwise guys were making their own intakes or
Using some old offenhiuser / European 2.9’cosworth intake wizardry

I believe the old 2.8/ 2.9 distributor can be made to work in a pushrod 4.0
I’ve heard of it being done with a sohc too? Not sure how needs a cam gear to drive it

The early raingutter rangers and bii came with a c5 auto just before the a4ld this is basically a c3/c4 trans with a 2.8/2.9/4.0
Bellhousing and a 4wd tailhousing

I seee... I was thinking '97 4.0 SOHC complete with its fuel infection and clip off and ignore the PCM trans functions that went to the 4R44 or whatever auto trans is in these old '97 V-6s, or use a 5 speed PCM if there is such a model as a 5 speed behind a 4.0 SOHC from the factory. I don't know myself.

Yes there are 5 speed sohc in sport, sport trac, and ranger
Rare in the sport trac but they do exist
More common in the ranger 2000-2011 are all sohc if the 4.0 option.

97 sohc truck uses 5r55e not the 4r55e

The a4ld lost its vacuum modulator and kick down cable became the 4r44 and 4r55 then eventually the 5r55e

All of these are 4 speeds the 5r simply uses 1gear and overdrive to create a false 2nd gear
Scary!
All of them derived from the c3 auto that came in the pinto lol lol

Whereas the 4r70w in our 5.0 trucks came from the old aod then aode and aodew aka the 4r70w.
Available in f250 and expeditions the 4r is a much stronger automatic lol

Geez, don’t muddy the waters…….this is painful enough.

its been done....

is this from morana?

its a "central bottleneck" in my mind. yeah it can be doen w/o but then it makes it all harder to follow it all, vs if it all goes thru one central point it makes it a bit easier. yeah computers dont always work but when they work theyre nice, and ive only seen maybe 1 bad gem(?) so far, by comparison to many many other issues in newer cars. imo early obd2 in late 90s kinda that sweet spot since it makes it easier to diagnose, but isnt like the new cars where everything is electronic

now thats not to say computers are always good but still, imo they work well when they work!
