98 explorer xlt wont hold idle???

So i have a friend with a 98 xlt that wont hold an idle. Batt. and alt. are both fine and it doesnt throw any codes but when you start it cold it wont hold idle at all but sometimes when its warm, mind you very rarely it will hold an idle for a little bit but then go back to nothing.


its a 4x4 4.0L 98 XLT

Anyone have any ideas that would be greatly appr.

Do a search for IAC cleaning. Thats the first place to start.

Also clean the mass air flow sensor (MAF) which is located in the intake tube between the air filter and the intake manifold.

Use electrical connector cleaner, NOT carb/fuel injector cleaner.

While you do that you can re-tighten everything to ensure there is no leakage in the intake tubes.

Worked for me.
