98 Ford Explorer Sport 2d 2wd slams into gear

When I first put this vehicle into gear it slams immediately, not smooth. 98 ford explorer sport 2 door 2 wheel drive with the 4.0 x-vin. What could be the reasons for this? Recently replaced the filter and fluid.

How high is the idle?

By slams, do you mean you hear a clunk under the vehicle.
If so, it's the slip yoke.

Guess I need to clarify, I own 3 explorers, 3 of them when putting into gear slide in gently before engaging, however this explorer as soon as you put it into gear it's in gear no sliding or softness I am wondering if this is a solenoid pack issue?
