98 ranger transmission removal

i have gotten the starter out and to the point of removing the torque converter nuts. my question is is there a special tool that i need to get them off? because i can get on the nut but it seems that i cant get all the way down on it. i just tore up a knuckle pretty good when socket slipped off. any help would be greatly appreciated!!! oh it has the 2.5 motor and the 4r44e transmission.

you probably have the wrong size socket. The ends are rounded but the right sized socket will seat all the way just fine. (off the top of my head I think they are 14mm)
