98 X-Code XLT
Hello all, first post! ok, i have a 98 XLT X-code 4wd, heads are shot to the moon. so, i got a cherry deal on a 96 x-code 2wd engine. is there any difference in the two? I noticed that the MAF connector is different and the tranny connector(?) (largest on back of engine 10 wires) had a different pinout. Any experience with a simular setup? Anybody?

Seriously? Nobody has had this issue? Are there no master techs that can answer this? Are the MAF sensor connectors the same at all?

98 has the temp sensor built into the MAS sensor, no they are not the same

there are many differences from a 96 engine to a 98 engine, the fuel systems are different, the wiring and many sensors are different

the way to approach this swap is to strip your new 98 engine down to the intake and valve covers, then put it in the truck. Now use all the parts and accessories from your old 96 engine on the newer 98 block.
This way youe engine remains plug and play

the block changed very little if all all from 96-2001, but the truck around it changed quite a bit

Well, the truck itself is a 98, older, lower mileage engine. So if I strip the wiring harness from the 98 block and mate it to the 96 block then I should be good? If the tranny wiring harness isn't connected, will that affect shifting or speedometer readings?? And I know it's illegal to swap in a older motor, if your area has emissions. I live in the sticks so that's a non-issue.

Ok. Everything is sorted out. Thanks for the advice!

you should be using the 98 everything on top of the 96 block only use the 96 block, heads and lower intake

You may even WANT to use the 98 oil pan oin the 96 block if they updated it, I prefer the stamped steel over the aluminum but the aluminum cools better
