98 whining from front as speed increases

Like my dad said, if I take it to a dealership, they can put it on the computer and see what's wrong with it. A local mechanic might not have the technology to figure out what's wrong with it. I estimate a bill of about $500-600. Oh well.

#1) im a local mechanic and i guarantee if i had 30 minutes with that thing and some wrenches i could easily find the problem and fix it. Its hard to assess a problem on a message board because there's so many moving parts that can make a sound like that

#2) lol my dad would say that crap to. but lets think here- do you really think a computer is going to tell you that theres dirt behind the brake-pad or something? you have dirt/rocks somewhere causing a sound. Unless they're causing a fault in a sensor somewhere the computer aint gonna do jack in finding the problem.

Pay your local guy $75/hr and it'll be fixed. probably in much less than an hour

trust me, ive gotten mud and dirt everywhere and its caused all sorts of sounds- been there/fixed that

oh and FYI: you're computer is an OBD-II.. i guarantee every mechanic on your block has the computer to read that.. cause thats what "every" newer car is equipped with.

Thanks man... I'll see about getting the appointment cancelled tomorrow. What would you suspect I should tell the mechanic to look for? Just tell him that I think there's mud behind the brake pad? and describe the sound it makes?

just describe the sound. and if you're vehicle always makes that sound- give him permission to test drive it.

also- request to be shown exactly what the problem is... for 2 reasons

1) you may learn something
2) less of a chance of gettin ripped off. yea i hate to say it but you gotta be careful... there are people out there that give guys like me a bad name.

Alright, will do. Thanks.

aww man they're gonna tear you apart once the see that you've been offroad.

dont take it to a dealer, bring it to a local mechanic like pep-boys or something

DONT go o a dealer to get those serviced, no doubt. They will ream you royally. Definitely a local mechanic. I would go to a 4x4 / suspension shop... they usually service and have experience with offroad issues.

Im telling you, service your front diff and get the bearings repacked. scrape the dirt off our drive shaft.

When the bearings are repacked, any mudd in the brakes or whatever will be cleaned with soapy water. Also, the hubs and bearings are cleaned and repacked with grease. You kill like 3 birds with 1 stone doing this. And its a reason why its recommended after offroading. DO that or pay the price later with new bearings and seals around.. And i quote, "Been there done that, he heh..

..

just some insight. on 2nd gens we cant repack our bearings. we have a hub/bearing assembly that's sealed. however they do go bad.. but when they go bad you get more of a squeaking sound than a drinding.

The noise he's describing has to do with the breaks, i have no doubt about that. Sometimes it takes more than just taking the pads off and looking. Theres not much space to get mud in the driveshafts to make a noise like that. Im sure once its on a lift and a mechanics pulls the front tires off/brakes/rotors he'll find a nice chunk of mud thats hiding back there.

Well... Here's the deal guys... I'm still taking it to the Ford Dealership because a friend of mine just took his 86? Caddy in for a tune-up and oil change and guess how much he payed at the local mechanic???? $450!!!! #### that. I figure, if I'm going to pay $500 for a tune-up, might as well have it done right at the dealer that works on Explorers all day. Btw, my friend took his caddy back in to the shop today because it's dieing on him now... ROFL!!! I don't trust any of the mechanics around here for ****.

I had a 93 buick century a little bit ago before i got the X and none of the shops could figure out what was wrong with the "studdering" that was wrong with it. I sold it... 2 weeks later, my sister (buyer of car) had it fixed by a friend of hers. The problem was the coils were gone in the 1/4. LOL and the ####ing mechanics couldn't figure that out?

Anyways, it's going to the Ford Dealership and I'll probably get raped, but if it's fixed when I get it back. I'll be happy.

PS- Is anyone else having problems blowing their horn fuse? My fuse has blown 4 times in the 3 months I've had it. GRRR!!!
