'98 XLT 4X4
Hello everyone, I have a '98 XLT 4X4. Pulled in garage last night, everything fine. Went to leave this morning and pass. front wheel locking in reverse. Other 3 are fine. Driving forward is fine. Backing up wheel feels like it "busts" loose for a quick second then locks back up. Only went like 10 feet. Don't know what to do, or what to even look at! Caliper/brakes? CV? xfer case? I verified 4x4 was in "auto", put it into 4HI and 4LO just going a couple of feet, then back into "Auto" and still doing it. Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Whoa!!
Check the brake caliper brackets-
there are 2 bolts holding them to the front spindle-and they have been known to work loose-

Take the offending (locking) wheel off and look---:D

Did you recently have a brake service done?

Update

Just to give everyone an update. After looking more into the problem and taking the wheel off, I found that one of the caliper bolts was now missing and that is what was causing it to act like that in reverse only, caliper would rotate and hit the rim in reverse, not catch if going forward. Now I have to look into what needs to be done to remedy this problem.

Wow, JTSmith, you were right on.... sorry I didn't read the post before I came in to write the update. You were exactly correct though... one of the bolts had come loose and fell out. This forum is the greatest.... filled with many knowledgable people who like to help. Thanks greatly.

New bolts
100 ft lbs of torque and red loc tite--:D

And a bullet for the guy who did the brake job--or slap on the hand if it was you-:D
Can you imagine what would have happened if the other bolt had fallen out at 70 mph?

I was just thinking that... because I think I know (hind sight being 20/20) exactly when it happened. Last night on my way home, going around a corner on the highway near my house, pretty large left curve, 3/4ths through the curve the truck's right side kinda dipped really quick. Probably when it came out. Damn thing. BTW, as soon as I get the new bolt and put it all back together, I'm driving up to the shop that replaced the calipers 2 months ago.... Thanks again though.

Yeah-show them this post. They messed up, and could have caused you harm.

I would demand some sort of compensation.
