98 XLT transmission ?

Hey guys 1st post here just bought this 1998 Explorer XLT with 4.0 automatic i believe the its the 5R55E the code on door is D fluid smells burnt Suv will only move in reverse any suggestions? Also what years of trannys will fit in there or is 1998 the only year? what i mean is can i put a 99,2000, 01 in there? i thought the previous years wouldnt fit because of gears and bell housing are diffrent. it is 4x4 has 95,000 on it only paid $600.00 tranny only problem

OH sorry go here:
therangerstation.com and see if your door code tells you which trans you have.
I would try searching for 98 Explorer transmission, even google will bring up a ton of info.
As long as the 99-00 use the same trans type you should be allright. There are sometimes slight differences between years, so you are smart to be cautious. I wish I could be more help but I dont know the later model trucks as well...

Others on this forum do, there is alot of info here if you just try searching for it.
