first off, thanks for letting me join!
Now, I have a drum brake Explorer, and want to keep it that way, but was given a 99 disc brake rear end, no calipers, no rotors no caliper brackets, and no mounting bracket to axle for caliper bracket, but everything else is complete with axles studs to studs.
can I install the regular backing plate drum brake assy without modifications?

You can swap the drums on to the 99 axle without any mods, easy swap.

So, do just get a backing plate, rear brakes and a drum, or are there other brackets, I don't have my vehicle with me to inspect all the parts needed and I'm buying new parts from backing to drums.
or are there other brackets needed to bolt to the axle? Thanks again.

If the 99 disk rear end bolt pattern for the backing plate
fit with these of a drum brake baking plate
nothing else should be needed (maybee you need 8 new bolts/nuts for backing plates).
To install the backing plate you have to pull the axle shaft.
Maybe it makes sense to change the axle shaft bearings/seels?
Gear ratio should be the same.

holy crap, why is it so hard to find backing plates for drum brake explorers

they didn't but it's going on a 94 and want to keep stock brakes

why, the question is about a newer axle

why, the question is about a newer axle
Being installed on, and using, 1994 parts

1st gen guys might be more help, 2nd gen guys will just ask why. 😆

The thread was
Moved because we are
Putting a 99 axle
Into a gen 1 truck

Rangers came w drums so did sport tracs
Maybe help you find new backing plates

You could
Also
Convert to discs if you decided drum Parts
To hard to Find

Your current axle has everything you need. Most of the parts are not available new. I'd recommend replacing the axle shaft seals and outer bearings while the axle is apart. A lot easier to do now.

I think most of the drum brake parts are available (Rockauto or LMC)
, except the backing plates.

Maybe these backing plates fit...
