Hi everybody
I bought a 1999 Explorer Sport 2D 4WD and the dealer provided me 1 month warranty.the mileage is 94K.After a week O/D OFF started flashing and I went back to the dealer. He made the car serviced in a transmission shop and spent 700$ to change the computer-like box under the hood. Then O/D off is gone. After a week again it started.I wen back again and the car stayed 2 weeks in the transmission shop and serviced again/I do not know exactly what the they changed and serviced. He said it is ok.I got the car back and O La La.
O/D flashing back just after 15 miles.

There is not an obvious shifting problem while driving. The rpm and mph values match each other. The upshifts or downshifts are ok.I used in O/D off and tried gears 1,2 and 3(D) and check the mph and rpm matching also.I listened the sound of the engine. All is as they are supposed to be.4WD works and dashboard indicates when I turned on.Cruise control works.Gears do not slip and work properly.

The only problem is the clunking sound which sometimes occur. As far as I see online, this is a common problem in most explorers.

According to the service manual when O/D off flashed the car must be immediately serviced and the service has been performed twice already. The dealer really stood behind his business and dealt with everything.I bought the car for 3K and he spent 1K more. The transmission shop says everything is ok now.The car runs normal. but O/D still flashes.

I am really confused.I appreciate any comments or advises.

Thanks to all.

transmission shop should be swapping in a new tranny.

transmission shop should be swapping in a new tranny.

By this sentence did you mean that transmission guy must change or already changed the tyranny to get rid off the flashing or by providing the temporary solutions each time he tries to make me demand a tyranny rebuild?

But rebuilt costs too high.

If the O/D is flashing, the trans is hurt. If they swap a new brain in, it runs until the codes run enough to signal a major problem, then it starts again.

Your Ex needs a full rebuild/new trans.

I would take it back to the dealer and tell them the trans is junk, and threaten a lawsuit if they do not make it right. Tell the trans shop the same thing. The dealer telling the trans shop to tell you that a flashing O/D light is, frankly, bulls**t- and shady business. By both the dealer AND the transmission shop. They just want you to go away until the warranty is over.

If they know enough about the situiation to tell you it is not a problem.... Then they know enough to tell you EXACTLY why the light won't stay off !
This will put the ball back in their court and then you can tell us what they
" claim " the problem is.

I am kinda with Joe on this one, The light is there to tell you there is a problem. If it is flashing then there is a reason why....

You are exactly right.I will ask them for details about the O/D flashing.
One more question.O/D flash does not appear when I drive a couple of mile or may be 6-10 but comes around 15 mile? What can be the reason for that?

Thank you all.

I read several posts such as the same problem with O/D flash for a long time (several months or a couple of years) but the guy who posted the thread drove the car without problem.

I know this flash indicates a problem because the purpose of it is this. Can the reason be an electrical issue, a fuze which interferes or something like that instead of a real tyranny problem.

I know lots of the people make shady business nowadays but I still want to believe that there are people who really makes his job fairly.

The car has been serviced twice and some problems really has been eliminated.

Usually when the OD light flashes, the trans goes into 'limp' mode. Limp mode results in hard shifting which should be noticeable. As others have stated, you need to hold your ground with the dealer and get them to fix it properly (probably a rebuild). Make sure you keep good documentation on what and when they are 'fixing' it. At some point they will probably tell you that you are out of warranty and go take a hike.

If it were me, I'd take the truck into a trans shop and ask them to provide a diagnosis. Then take that diagnosis back to the dealer. It might cost you a couple of bucks for the diagnosis, but it could be a good investment. HOLD YOUR GROUND!!

Darn right. How do you really know he's spent a grand? Cut the BS and get your own diag done and do what you gotta do to get what you paid for. Yes there are people making an honest dollar but don't let that thought influence your thinking here. Come on.

Yeah,I will go to a trans shop around and have the truck diagnosed to see what is going on.I hope the diagnosis does not cost too much.

Thank you all.

We have a pretty good shop here where I live, They diagnose for free
( scanner and road test )

Of course every time I take stuff to them it need a " complete rebuild " But I have had other shops confirm their findings.....

One other thing to mention.... disconnecting the battery/resetting the codes will cause the OD flashing light to go away. It's possible that may be what the dealer has been doing.

Also, did the dealer give you a carfax report on the truck to verify it's history and mileage? If not, you can give me the vin and I'll run it and send you (need email address) a report.

thank you very much for your offer Marragtop,I have both carfax and autocheck history reports for the car.All the information and mileage is accurate as the dealer said.

In fact I bought the car because it was a good deal for me. 3K is an affordable price for me as I am a student and the mileage is low in compare to other cars.10 years old SUV and 94K.The dealer gave me 1 month warranty and dealt with me when I went back with the problem. The history reports were clean.

I do not know.I am confused.I just want a car to use without problem as everybody did.

Thank you all.

Today I visited a transmission shop and he diagnosed the system.
The output was `Gear 5 incorrect ratio`and possible reasons was either a bad solenoid or harness wire. The cost estimation of him is 200-400 $ total for labor and parts.

It sounds like you found a good trans shop. Most places just say 'you need a rebuild.. $1700-2100.' By any chance, did they give you the trans codes that they pulled?

Yeah In fact I searched online and found him with incredible 5-star reviews form previous customers.I visited him. He diagnosed the truck with a computer-like machine and identified the code immediately. Then he made a ride test to check and see how to car runs and gears shift.

The fault code is P0735. Incorrect 5th gear ratio.

Then I noticed why O/D flash off appears after 10-15 mile because my path is generally same and I use it to commute to the school. After 6-8 miles I start to drive the car in highway so speed up and reach 5th gear.then flashing appears.

The machine tells either the solenoid or harness wiring must be changed. If the transmission slips internal control must be done.

He made a drive test for this reason to see the transmission works without problem and he verified.

He estimated 200-400$ for replacements.

He also prepared a detailed report about the diagnosis to show to my dealer including fault, possible solutions and estimated cost.

the diagnosis was 50 $ regular but he charged me only 20$.He was really a good guy.

I went to the dealer and showed him the report. He got angry with the transmission shop because the problem was very easy to find and that guy made the dealer spent approx. 1K for the car.He also showed me the receipt of previous services.
By the way my warranty has expired while dealing for this thing. Now I am waiting to get back the car and see what will happen?
