99 Explorer won't start after sitting - what should I try?

Yes its going bad...I had one groaning and ran it for a while but was always worried about breaking down. Replaced it with a BOSCH, which with the sock and shipping was less than sixty bucks.

Is it easy to replace? How long will it take? Is it a messy job?

How would I know the what the fuel pressure was? (from post before this post)

So, should I replace the fuel pump and sender as a package since I have to get into the tank anyway?

Also, if anyone can confirm the part # for the 4.0 SOHC engine it would be great

I found XL2Z-9H307A as the part number but I am having a hard time finding another part to cross reference for confirmation.

Did you replace the fuel pump? Have you checked fuel pressure?

No, that is what I am trying to figure out what to do- just replace the pump and screen or do I need the entire hanger/sender unit.

Have not checked the pressure. That is the next step once i get it to my friends garage

What I did was replace the pump, which came with the sock. No problems since. YMMV

I like the idea of just the pump, much cheaper.

59 dollars shipped.

Ooh. OEM? Which vendor?

Not to muddy the waters, I might have missed your response, but check the spark plugs. I was having a similar issue, but it more consistent. The car had a rough idle at start for a while, then cleared up. Then one day it just wouldn't start without cranking for 3-5 minutes.

If I let it sit through a weekend without it running, it was absolute hell to start. I was told it was cracked cylinder heads, coolant leaking into the chamber. That coolant wasn't allowing the engine to fire. (I have removed the rubber washer from the bottom of the radiator cap to force the pressure to the overflow, and haven't had issues in 7-8 months.)

I am not saying you have the same issue, I am not a mechanic. Everything I learned, I learned from here. But if you check the plugs and see rust color, or liquid, it might not be a fuel issue. Before you drop money on a pump, I would check it.

Wound up with 0 pressure at the rail, so proceeded with the installation of a new pump and it fired right up. We never got the fuel line loose from the pump, so we had to drop the tank. thank God we had a lift to do the work, but it took waaay too long to complete the work.

Now I have a shudder in the power steering. Fluid was low and added. Hopefully it will work itself out.

Bleed the steering if it persists, just turn lock to lock a few times. YMMV
