Hello all,
I just wanted to introduce myself. I happened upon this Explorer locally advertised on a facebook swap & sell. It was literally right around the block lol. The guy was selling it as-is in a non-running state, and he had no idea how to check or repair anything.
I'm pretty handy with a wrench so I figured I'd do a quick diagnostic and got it running on starter fluid. I did a carfax and saw it was a one-owner vehicle and after finding this site and confirming my initial hunch about the fuel pump not working I rolled the dice, talked him down a bit and bought it.
This site has been very useful -- I learned about and tried the fuel cutoff switch. Unfortunately it wasn't tripped, so I had to dig deeper. I checked the fuses and relays and with everything checking out ok I decided I needed to check for power at the fuel pump connection.
I really didn't want to drop the tank. I hadn't done it before and this is my first bigger vehicle so I don't have adequate jacks, and I couldn't tow it onto my ramps with the mower, lol. I again used the site and made the decision to cut an access panel to pull out the fuel pump. Once the panel was cut open I was able to officially determine that power was getting to the pump and that the pump was not working (I had ordered a pump the day before, so I was happy to confirm this).
Long story short -- switched out the pump, cranked for a couple seconds and it fired right up. Runs just as smooth as any engine I've ever had and I (and my wife) am relieved that it is running now.
Thanks so much for the site! I'm not usually this wordy, but if I have any thing to share I sure will!
