New to the forum. Just bought a '99 Sport version for my daughter. 2WD, 4.0 SOHC, automatic tranny. What are the "normal" problems with this vehicle (ones that most everyone seems to run across). I have 2 days in which to return it to the dealer. Done a basic look over but haven't had a chance (nor will I) to check engine compression or vacuum "health". Just curious if I'm getting myself into a potential lemon. Any and all input appreciated.

Regards,

David

cant speak for the 99, but i have a 98 w/ the same engine and tranny. almost 82k, no problems with tranny or engine. only thing is suspension is weak and makes noise. steering is noisy sometimes (creaks, groans, etc). drivers door lock is slowly failing, have to hit the keypad a couple times to get it to open...but this only happens occasionally. all of these are just annoyances, nothings had to be fixed yet. other than these minor things, its a great truck. ive had mine a little over a year and im really happy with it.

I have a 99 SOHC Sport 4x4 w/ 72k that I just bought about 5 months ago. The only problem I have had was with cold start-up, and I fixed that with a 65 dollar idle air controller. The other big problem for our years (at least from what people say) is the timing chain tensioner likes to rattle a lot eventually. I dont think its really too much of a potential hazard unless you plan on revving the crap outta the engine a lot. Youd prolly hear this rattle (sounds like a diesel engine) at startup if this was starting to go on your daughters X. Good luck, I am very pleased with mine so far.
