ohh i love this forum! & despite this major setback, i love my explorer. anyway, since i am new this may have been covered.. but thought i'd share. i recently had to have the WHOLE TRANSMISSION replaced. since we got the thing (new) it has run very rough and idled funny. i take it to the dealer (could this be my first mistake?) to have it checked. "poor helpless female is HEARING things.." is basically the line i get. (hubby gave me the same crap). then it starts this nasty vibration when shifting from 3 to 4 (or into od i can't remember) at 34,000. warranty covered the fix: remove & install/replace main control valve body. whatever that really means i'm not sure but i didn't have to pay and it was fixed, supposedly, so i went on with life. months later it started the SAME vibration again, only this time they told me "oh your transmission is bad". what? what needs fixing t his time? "uh, the WHOLE thing". hello?? did you not JUST work on it? they tried to tell me it would cost me $2,800 and so sorry, over warranty. i made a HUGE stink about this, (won't bother you with the details. let's just say i can be persistent), and in the end ford payed $2,000, i had to pay $500 and the dealer covered the difference, and got a new 72/100,000 powertrain&engine warranty (yes, engine too they say). i was told ford would send me a copy of the warranty and never did. called the dealer. they faxed me over some oasis printout from the internet they said only THEY had access to. does this sound odd to anyone out there or is this s.o.p.? remember, i am just a little girl here. big boys tell me things and i don't know if i am being fed a helping of bs or not. anyway, before i create another stink with them i'd love your feedback. another note, my personal belief is the dealer farked up the fix the first time and had to cover their butts the second time. they were all too cooperative. anyway, i am out $500 but i have a new transmission and a great warranty (or do i? am i in an x-file here?) any thoughts?

yes i love my xl for many reasons, probably because in 99 we paid a LOT less via autobytel than the eddie bauer editions out there with bells & whistles we didn't need. (although the transmission is a much needed bell! hahaha!) also, it is PAID FOR and like toyota says, what a feeling! i am so hoping this vehicle will last our family a very long time. now, onto the cd changer thread!

Well, if the problem is solved then I'd be happy. I know it sucks to be out $500, but think of that as payment for the warranty. Your dealer does sound like crap though. If the problem isn't solved, then you have some work to do! I usually don't advise people to eat money like that, but like I said, think of it as payment for the extended warranty.

Welcome as a full member! And I like your nickname ;)

I like your nickname also, that seems pretty early for an Explorer trans to go, but at least you got that new warrenty. Your not the only one, there are plenty of people who had/are still having trans problems, really it is probably the only weakness on the whole truck. However my 94' is still on the original trans and I was hard as hell on that thing, same thing with both of my moms Mountaineers, not one problem with them "Knock on Wood". My sister has my 94' now so it'll pry start having problems now, cause you know girls just hear things;) J/K.

I had to replace my tranny at around the same milage. Thank goodness I had the extended warranty when it went. I lost all gears except 1 and 2. They took two weeks to fix it, but at least it was covered. And yes it does seem to be a bit early for a tranny to go.
