99 XLT no reverse

Today, I put my 99 XLt in reverse heard a pop and lost reverse. Is this common? what might the cause be? Thanks

Broken low/reverse band

Hello! Your low/reverse band is broken. The sound you heard was the band breaking. You will have to pull the trannie out. Sorry

Same thing happened to my friend's 99 Sport, the V6's don't have too great of a tranny imo.

Same thing happened to me last year. I ended up having the transmission rebuilt since it had to come out anyways.

update

Took Explorer to Cottman Trans.. I was told it was an internal problem and that to take out tranny 375.00 then they would let me know rest of damage. Ballpark the manager told me was 1600.00-2200.00. So if anyone knows if this is a decent price let me know. Thanks for your help

Ehh, I had a crappy experience with Cottman transmission years ago. Maybe it was just the one in my area? Who knows...

But yeah, he's right...It's an internal problem and the transmission DOES have to come out. $375 for R/R sounds about right for 4X4. The price he quoted you was a bit high though. I paid $1500 out the door for a full rebuild (I paid cash so they cut me a break)

Damn.. I found a deal for my friend with the 99 Sport... replacement tranny from the same year explorer, and it's a sport... for $150..

In fact, my friend hasn't taken advantage of it.. it is still there. It's from a totaled 99 sport, it's in a "junk yard"..next to a privately owned body shop, where I take my truck.. the deal was if someone will pull it out themselves, $150 for it... I bet if you called him, he'd pull it out and send it to you for slightly more... but a lot less than you were quoted.. idk.. it's a shot in the dark.. but if ur intrested pm me for his number.... would be from alaska btw.. no rust! ^_^
