1999 Ford Explorer V8 5.0
I have searched this site no kidding for hrs. On trying to find a solution to my problem and here it is

i have a 1999 ford explorer v8 5.0 with automatic a/c and heat controls. Meaning i dont have the common turn knob type. All i do is adjust the temp by pressing arrows up and down and the computer does the rest.

First off there is a knocking sound click click going on under the dash almost seems like its comming from the glove box. What i read is that it could be the blower flap motor going out or has gone out. However, with the ac heat completely off, it still clicks? Why?

Next i read that it runs off a vaccum and that recharging the system could un stick this clicking sound. So i went to auto zone and bought an ac can with a gauge and recharged system. No luck. Still clicks and still doesent change the direction of air flow. It is stuck on defrost.

Last after i recharged my system with new ac stuff, i noticed that yes it is still stuck on defrost but it is blowing hot??? But i just recharged my system. So why is it blowing hot while on max ac? Is it something to do with the blower flapper motor? I dont see why it could but please help.

A tutorial with pics on how to change the motor or whatever else i could use would be greatly appricated. If anyone can send pics on how to change any part involved with this repair would be heaven sent.

Thank you again
jeff g

More info

I just removed my glove box and the little black box blower flapper with gear thingy is most impossible to remove without removing the dash bc the box is held in by four screws and i can only get to two of them. I would much rather remove the dash and be able to freely work on this rather than try impossible fixes to this problem.

So does anyone have a writeup with pics on how to remove the dash of a 1999 ford explorer v8 5.0? If so please send them

seems to me i've seen a write-up on this forum, with pics, for removing the dash, but it's a huge job and other's here have said they're replaced the door motor w/out having to remove the dash. i can't say from personal experience, but i wouldn't want to take on that job.

There's one little hex screw that holds the door actuator in place that is really hard to get to, but it can be done with a normal ratchet. IMO its still much easier to get this screw out than to remove the entire dashboard.

Once the actuator is out, use a hot knife to cut the bottom of the box out. I've done this job twice and while annoying, its not really that bad.

Temperature and direction of air flow are completely separate issues. The blend door flap to control the temperature is covered above.

The air flow direction is the one controlled by vacumn (and AC refrigerent charge level is totally irrelevant). If vacumn is interuppted, the direction flaps default to the defrost position - therefore, if all the air comes out of defrost then you have a vacumn issue. Very common is to have a break in the vacumn lines in the engine compartment between the manifold and the vacumn reservoir (black plastic softball inside the passenger side fender) or between the reservoir and the firewall. Good luck.

if you have the manual HVAC controls and have a vacuum leak the air flow defaults to the defroster vents. i don't know if this phenomenon also occurs with the EATC controls. i do know that on one of my Mountaineers with the EATC controls, the air/heat pretty much blows equally from everywhere in all settings, except in the MAX A/C setting, where it blows exclusively out of the center vents. i assume this is an EATC issue. my other 2 EATC equipped trucks work correctly.

I know this is years old but am new to forum and have been looking for an hour or so for the location of the directional flap for the front vents of a 2000 explorer xlt. I haven't checked for vacuum leak yet but atleast want to wedge the flap open to get air through the front vents. Any help will be appreciated!
