I have a couple odd symptoms with the 4R70W behind the '96 5.0 in my Ranger. Neither seem severe but both can be quite annoying.

1st. Particularly during a rapid stop, it seems like the torque converter does not unlock and it'll either cause the engine to stumble or go so far as to stall. Seldom see any similar symptom during normal stops.

2nd. The transmission seems sluggish to downshift during sudden acceleration.

All other tasks the transmission behaves completely normally.

I've no history of the transmission prior to it's install in the Ranger. It got a complete fill of fresh synthetic fluid and a clean filter along with a new set of 1st/2nd accumulator springs as part of the V8 conversion. Insides of the transmission were quite clean when I opened it up.

6/7 months and 8K miles later, fluid is still looking new and the symptoms have not gotten any worse.

Any ideas anyone?
