I'm not sure if this has been reported before but ought I would mention it.

The driver's door latch assembly on my 98 Explorer XLT has been acting up for a while now. When I unlock the doors with the remote or the inside rocker switch, the door lock button only pops up 1/2 of normal or less and I had to use great force to try to lift it the rest of the way or push it down manually. Thankfully, it always worked well enough that I was able to open the door with either the inside or outside lever. I knew this was going to probably get worse and was waiting for warmer weather to arrive before attempting to open the door panel and have a look inside.

Well, last Friday it got much worse to the point that the button would barely popup at all and I had to climb in from the passenger side and unlatch the door from the inside. Expecting the worst, I prepared to remove the door panel when, at the last moment, I noticed this:

The door button as you can see above is so badly mangled that it was hanging up in the guide hole. With the button removed, the latch lock assembly works perfectly. I temporarily stole the button from the passenger door and all is good now.

So, in short, sometimes the cause of a "broken" latch/lock is not in the door latch or the linkage but something much simpler.

Very common mistake removing inner door panels is not lifting up before pulling out. The plastic "hooks" on the panel are often broken causing alignment issues. "Christmas tree" retainers and panel screws will hold the panel, but often aren't strong enough to align the panel properly. Another possibility is a bent or skewed lock knob rod after replacing latch parts.

But I never did any of that stuff - never removed a door panel on this vehicle at all. I suppose the dealer may have done so at some point.

I don't know why the knob was so mangled but it has been acting up for many months.

I am having similar issues to the OP but i usually just mash the unlock button like 10 times until it opens but if it doesnt i open the rear door and reach my hand up to the front drivers door from the inside and i can always open the door that way. because even with the doors "locked" i can still open my doors from the inside. does that sound like my latch assemble is going?

Sounds like the commonly failed spring inside the door latch. Could also be a faulty actuator if it unlocks intermittently. Only way of diagnosing is by removing the door panel. I had my passenger door fly open going 50 MPH around a long sweeping off ramp. Got fed up and replaced both front door latches and actuators. This "spring assist" fix may help you.
