Hey all,
I'm having some trouble with my '92 a4ld. It was rebuilt around 30k ago and has been problem-free so far. Driving on the highway, when getting on the gas to pass someone and downshifting, the trans seemed to drop out of gear for lack of a better way to explain it. I was coasting and the motor ran to the redline. This has happened to me twice so far, but otherwise the trans seems to be fine. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Slippage. Thats what mine did until I saw a huge puff of white smoke out the back of my truck and I got towed home later that night. If it was just rebuilt thats sort of crappy.. Mine was never rebuilt and it died at like 215k kms, after that I just went out and got an M50D and I've enjoyed my new truck ever since. If your capable of doing the swap I'd recommend that BEFORE your transmission dies on you... Others here will probably agree.

Time wise? All in all it took me 3 days for the swap, but 6 months to get the parts because I was way to busy with work. The swap is pretty straight forward and theres very little that you even need to know. The hardest part is swapping pedals and then the wiring, but its just 2 wires for the neutral safety, for the reverse lights I dunno still as I havent bothered connecting them back up.

Did your front seal blow out ATF when the motor overheated? Check your ATF level. It might be low. This could make it feel like it's going into neutral. Check the vacuum line going into the modulator for leaking ATF.

Does it feel like it's gone into neutral ????? Does it "grab" a gear after slowing down a bit or does it go back into gear after you bring the vehicle to a stop???

sorry guys..some stuff came up and i forgot about this thread..it does feel like it's in neutral and as soon as i let off the gas and slow down a bit it grabs and is fine..the modulator seems to be ok..no atf in the vacuum line..atf level is fine..i'm planning on dropping the pan this weekend to change the fluid and filter..the motor hasnt overheated (ever that im aware of), i meant that it ran to the redline on the tach..no atf leaks (other than a slow one from the pan gasket) or anything like that..thanks for the replies so far guys
