Okay out side temps only in the low 70's going up hill on pavement temps hit 200 or better and when off reading same weekend low gear low 4x4 up hill hard climb temps got to 250 plus and in fact pegged the needle on my mechanical sunroof gauge ( marked from 100 to 250 deg’s). The temp probe is installed right before the line go's into the radiator in the tranny line but before it hits any of the coolers. Same set up as ExploringNC Installing a Transmission Temperature Gauge write up.

From reading I take it this is also when the oil is at its hottest point as it’s from the converter also and not what the whole tranny is seeing.

So is this way to hot and would a larger external cooler help this? I do have the stock cooler now on it but its small. Now going down the HWY the temps are about 140 to 150 with out side air temps in the high 50 to just hitting 70 deg F.

I do not want to burn this tranny up as it costed too much to have rebuilt and I need it to last a few more years so any real world help or input is greatly wanted and thanks for it a head of time

...A steady 250 is cooked...

...I've had mine hit 210 once or twice in the last couple years pulling large highway hills...190 is not uncommon when it's hot out for an A4ld...You may have a blockage at your cooler...:dunno:

...I would pull the tranny pan and change the fluid and filter asap...Did you just install the temp gauge and when was the last time you changed tranny fluid?

...I ran mine at the tranny pan and feel comfortable with the readings I get from there...Depending on how yours is hooked up near the radiator and if it's electrical or mechanical, you may be getting a higher false reading from what it is near..

Tbars you seam to be thinking like my self along the lines of a blockage some how in the cooler.

The temp probe is just below the radiator hook up port for the in put tranny line to the radiator cooler. Maybe 3 inches lower then the opening for the tranny line.

I will be taking it in to have the fluid and filter changed ASAP as I had planed to. May do it my self if the weather lets me.

Also as I said it’s mechanical and it’s mounted right at the radiator.

This picture is not mine but it shows the same set up I have and were mine is also located. Same gauge and all. just it’s on a 93 in my case.

I so need to put on a bigger cooler and a remote filter!
