Yeah, that's NEVER a pleasant sound to hear! Not sure, but I would bet it's going to need a complete teardown, rebuild, and then clean out or replace the lines, the aux cooler (if equipped) and the radiator. You could always do what I and others have done, and spend about $350 or so and an afternoon in the junkyard, and convert it to a 5 speed! Hope 8t turns out to be a simpler fix, though. Good luck with it!

Are you turning the torque converter in the bell housing while the transmission is vertical? If so, then you will always hear a grinding noise while the torque converter is pushed into the pump. In normal operation, the torque converter is never that deep in the bell housing while it's horizontal.

No i had it on the side but I did have it pressed all the way back can any one tell me how hardvit is to rebuild?

You will need special tools to rebuild everything such as seals installation tools, torque wrench, sockets, etc. It's not that difficult just as long as you follow an ATSG or Ford rebuild manual. Flush the front cooler before you install another transmission.
