ok so i have a 2x4 a4ld trans it has no reverse and in 3 and 4 it gos in and out. it feels kinda like its free wheeling but in 1st and 2 its great. if anyone has any ideas it would be great. thanks for all input

This one will have to be rebuilt to get it to work right.

Based on your description of the problem it sounds like the direct clutch is not holding.
 






so u dont think it could be a bad valve body gasket
 






From my limited reading of symptoms versus whats wrong what you described is a clutch issue, not a valve body issue which means a rebuild.

If you have time/energy/gumption, it is possible to put in a 5e55e transmission. Its not a plug/play (electronics) but There is a thread on here about doing that. That will give you a stronger and electronically controlled (a4ld is electronically inhibited) transmission, Plus its a 5 speed.
