Can anyone give me any ideas here? I've got the Ford Repair book directly from Ford, and I've litterally tried everything it tells me to.. including vacuum modulator, computer, MAF, cleaned the valve body, ETC, ETC, ETC. I've pretty much run out of ideas here! Please HELP!

The PCM commands the overdrive solenoid, so sensors such as the TPS, MAF or the VSS could be malfunctioning. Check the overdrive solenoid through the internal wiring harness, and the overdrive band with the adjustment stud. The servo could be bad, and would need to be replaced if it's dried out.

thanks sugar! I'll giv'er a try! Muchly appreciated!

I hope yours is one of the simple fixes such as the overdrive solenoid. When this happened to mine it lead to a full rebuild as I not only lost the overdrive band but also the overdrive drum inside the trany. Just a heads up on that as a worst case thing as I seam to never get by on the easy or cheap fixes my self but I can say after the rebuild the explorer shifts and runs like new now. I have had it from it being about 4 years old and just under 70,000miles. It now has over 210,000 miles. so even at a worse case if the rest is in good shape its worth it when done right not cheap but better then a replacement truck I believe at lest you know what you have instead of the unknown problems that surprise you.

Loss of overdrive is a very common problem with the A4LD and is almost never something simple. Chances are you could drive it for years if you just use D even with a mechanical problem like a cracked weld on the planetary. If adventurous, the OD section is the first thing when you open the transmission. A partial rebuild is really easy. Pulling a transmiion is the part I hate. Dropping the pan and looking for metal is the next step.

No overdrive as well

Hey everyone, i'm new here, so bare with me. HA. i have a 93 Ranger and my 2nd gear had completely gone out on me so i got a trans from the junkyard and put it in myself using my buddys lift. every gear shifts fine, reverse works fine, but at first over drive was not working at all. i installed my old valve body from the old trans in the junk yard trans, because i know that over drive worked in that one, thinking it was a selonoid issue. now if i hold my foot on the gas going about 55 it stays in 3rd, but if i;m going that speed and i let off the gas and get right back in it, it shifts into 4th. i was thinking it could be my TPS sensor, but i'm not sure. and when u let off going 60 it just free wheels, the converter is not holding it back at all. let me know if anyone has any ideas, would be much appriciated. thanks.

Sounds like what my first one did. That one turned out to be a bad over drive drum an inside part. I had that tyranny rebuilt only to find out later it was not done right. Fact that shop worked on it two more times before I could drive it long enough to go past there warranty after that they would not help me even when it was only 2,000 miles past warranty and still 1 month with in. I did have it rebuilt again later and that’s when I found out the fist shop had not replaced any thing but soft parts. so if you do rebuild it or have a shop do it make sure both soft and hard parts are checked changed as needed. I am now happy with mine as it is better then when I bought it at 65 to 70,000 miles and it now has 210,000 on it the tyranny has now 30,00 on it from the last rebuild and not one problem at all ! Hope yours is not as bad but that’s what it sounds like and the rest is a FYI for you.

I've been on this forum before asking about adjusting bands in the A4LD transmission in the 1991. (Read the How to adjust the bands thread) I had mine rebuilt a year ago, OD worked a few times. I had a friend that said that the electic on that system is weak. So my question is that if I only adjust the OD band would I finally get OD. Or is it a solenoid not locking up the OD? Now driving on the highway the transmission runs in 3rd at 2800rpms, speeding up or slowing down is not cause it to shift into OD. (Start driving and staying in [D] )

Band adjustment? Or solenoid? Or what can it be?

a4ld POS

yeah my 94 x has had the a4ld rebuilt going on 4 times in 50,000 miles. first two times something went completly wrong and when ever i shifted into drive or o/drive it wouldnt engage until i reved the engine and it felt like it was a nutral drop. third time was overdrive... and now i dont even have a clue whats goning on with it. shifts fine in D thru all gears fine but if i start off in O/D the trans has a complete mind of its own. starts in 2nd gerar go to O/D back down, jumps gears and then other days it works great. also if its cold in the mornig when i go to wrk it want to hold 1st and 2nd. i have toi shif manualy then about a mile down the road at the stop light i put it in D and flawless *****.and when i hit about 45 mph i can shift into O/D and it works.

ANY KNOWLEDGE ABOUT WHAT MAY BE WRONG WOULD HELP A GREAT DEAL. IM NOT TO WORRIED ABOUT IT BUT ITS JUST ANNOYING AS HELL!

I can take off in any gear [D] D 2 1 everything works just won't kick into OD. I'm not sure about your problem. But mine did to same thing before it was rebuilt. Something like this, "I couldn't take off in [D] but any other gears work than I would shift from D into [D]."

its so damn anoying isnt it. spend all this money to get it fixed and just one thing after another, guess the saying "when it rains it pours" is true. im think about a manual swap or ive also been told a 770r4 will work to. not sure but i want to get rid of the A4LD completly.

hello Well ur not a lone mine did the samething accept i changed the motor everything went too good started it up drove down road and to my surprise no OD go figure

transmission

Hey guys need help I have a 1994 explorer
The overdrive kicks in and out I have changed both speed sensors as someone told me to did not fix it can anyone help?

Have you adjusted the kick down cable? Sounds like that might be your problem. If so, you're one of the lucky ones!

michaelreynolds: I would start this by probing the 3-4 shift solenoid circuit with a voltmeter and test drive it. You will be looking to see if you can see when the computer commands the 3-4 shift, and when it commands the 4-3 shift. If the actual shifting matches up with the computer commands, then you will be looking for a problem in the engine management system causing the computer to choose to go in and out of 4th gear. If the actual shifting does not match the computer's commands, then the problem is something inside the transmission.

You might go through the output state test (see my notes on pulling EEC-IV code thread in the EEC-IV forum) just to see what the "on off signal" looks like. It should just be a switch from 0 to 12 V (then from 12 V to 0 V), so it should not be difficult to see, but it may help to see the commands from the more controlled output state test before you go into the road test.
