Ok I did a good job of confusing myself this morning.

I have been convinced that my A4LD has the very common bad seals in the reverse piston problem.

When the truck is cold I have to wait about 10 seconds before reverse kicks in. This is the only problem my tranny is giving me.

This morning I was running ahead of schedule (first time for everthing) and started my X about ten minutes before I was ready to leave. after running in the garage (with door open) for about 10 minutes I jump in it to leave put it in reverse and instant engagement.

So If I start my truck and put it in reverse within a few seconds of starting I have a reverse delay. If I let the truck run for a few minutes no delay. also if the engine is still warm from driving and then I start it and put it in reverse there is no delay.

I have not owned the truck long enough to reach outside temps above freezing.

So is the delay I am having normal or will the o-ring upgrade cure my delay?

my fluid is topped off and looks good and red.

I am also confused about parts needed for the reverse servo fix. I priced a complete gasket and seal kit for $38 from a local trans shop. Can I just buy the upgraded seal kit or do I need the entire gasket and seal kit?

you can buy the O rings separately. There are TWO on the servo, a large one and a small one. I've not yet located the double lip seal which replaces the large O-ring being sold as a separate item. If you or someone has a supplier JUST for that double lip seal, please let me know.

It is nice to get the whole seal kit because if one goes it is likley soon some others will fail and at least you will have them on hand. I found this to be very handy.

I am going to asume by your response that my delay is most likley caused by the seals and I should go ahead and do the upgrade. I will add to this thread after im done and share my parts prices and sources and if my results were good.
the complete seal kit for 30 something bucks does have the ugraded double lip seal according to the guy at the local trans shop that I spoke to. I plan on ordering it in about a week.

I picked mine up seperately from a local AAMCO. I don't know if they had to tear into a kit for the parts or not, but they didn't charge me too much for the seal.

Call around to the local tranny shops and find out where they gat there parts most places will get them from a local source. You can probably go there and just get the kit right there at the counter.

What Ever It Takes (Huge transmission supply house) in Louisville has them in stock. They ship.
