A4LD Swap option from Advance Adapters

In the last pic, is that a trans temp sender in the pan?

Looks like a drain plug.

I still don't think this has been answered, so I'll ask it again.....Is this also possible for the 4R and 5R55E equipped Explorers?

It is a drain plug, but it is the exact same size and thread as a trans temp sender. I just haven't gotten that far yet to install one. My #1 priority right now is to buy a house before I have to go back to work. TIRED OF RENTING!

From Steve at 700r4.com
We also take the time to install a drain plug for easy maintenance. This drain plug location makes adding an electric temperature gauge very easy since the drain plug is 1/8" NPT, the same as most modern electric temperature gauge senders.

Is it sleeping yet? :D

Tell us some news about your new toys.

Well, I have to admit that I couldn't be happier with the setup. The 3.06:1 1st gear of the tranny and the 3.8:1 low range of the Atlas are an awesome combo. Doing the same type of offroading I usually do up here seemed muh easier than before. The hardest part was finding reverse with the Lokar. That will just take a little more practice.

On the road, I gained about 2 miles to the gallon. It seems the 700-R4 has a deeper overdrive than the A4LD and allows for about 2500 rpm at 70 mph.

After getting the body cleared out for the Atlas, all the rattles went away and works like a champ. The only thing I would recommend is to use a cable shifter of some sort for the tranny as to avoid a nightmare of trying to get the Lokar and Atlas shift linkage to not want to share the same space.

I've alway's liked Art Carr shifters. I bet they make one for the 700R4.

I just got everything figured out now and not about to change it now. I have about an 1/8 of an inch clearance, if that, between the two in Park and Rear 4hi. It didn't effect any driveability off or on road so it is fine the way it is. The only thing I might change now is to maybe get a longer stick with a double bend in it to get better clearance on the ashtray and cup holder.

The instructions are finally out. Here are the install intructions for the two adapters. As you can see, the possibilities are endless since they already have other adpters to mate almost any t-case to the 700-r-4. Hope this helps.

Engine to tranny adapter

Tranny to t-case

So lessee....

built 60 degree 700r4 with the TV cable, and flexible dipstick, $1500 or so?
Atlas II t case $2250
AA adapter 4.0L to 700R4: $400
Misc exhaust and fab work: $100

Do my own wiring, installation, etc...driveshaft mods, shift linkage, etc....

WOW!!! I need to borrow about $5k, anyone? hahahaha

For sale: 1 slightly used A4LD, and BW1354 T case :)

I realize this thread is titled "A4LD swap option from Advanced Adapters" but was wondering if this would also work for replacing the stock Mazda 5 speed? I have already replaced my clutch, throwout bearing and clutch master cylinder. Now I'm having problems getting into gear when stopped (twice as bad when in 4low) and my clutch slips when I punch it at a stand still. An auto tranny will deffiatley allow me to tow my camper again without using the wifes truck. Is this an option for me? I could go with the C4 or C5 (not sure which one works for the 4.0L) but I use my truck on the highwas a lot as I do for off-roading.

Can anyone answer this?

I've also been hearing a lot of noise from my tranny when in 5th gear upon decelerating. It's life is getting short! So I need to get my ducks in a row and ready for the funeral so I can start to pick up the peices and rebuild!!

Chris,

I think it would be an excellent swap. Lower first for the trails, and a little deeper OD for the hiway.

The bolt patterns on the engine block, and the transfercase are the same manual or automatic. So the physical bolt up wont be problem.
You have the manual trans so the wiring problems would be nil- reverse lights and neutral saftey switch bypassed.
You would need an auto trans tunnel plate to cover the extra hole in the floor(dealer, junkyard, or fab)
Remove the clutch assembly- or even just the pedal.

Those of you who remember the origins of this topic may remember that it was for a viable transmission swap to upgrade the Explorers, either manual or automatic. Since we appear to have one for the automatic drivers, it would seem to be time to do the same for the stir-your-own crowd (like me). A kit for the NV 3550 or something equally good would fill the bill. Let's try to drum up some interest in finishing the job we started many months ago. A six-speed would be even better!

OOOH! A 6 speed with a granny gear!!! That would rock!

Thanks SteveB! I thought it wouuld work. I know the bell housing bolt pattern is the same! Just wasn't sure if it would match with the manual stuff...basically if the kit covered everything that was needed. Not sure if the factory auto had things that the kit didn't include.

hmmm, what about a 3.4l 60 Degree V6 and Tranny swap... 180 HP 200 ft/lbs... the 3.4 is the same externally as the 2.8.

If my engine is dying like I think it is, this might be what I shoot for.
