Hello! I'm new to the forum, obviously compelled here by transmission problems.

My Automatic 91 went out as I was driving it. It had had some slippage prior to this as well as less power, occasionally, though I only know now because of all of the lovely research I've been doing. The slippage occured going from reverse to O/D. It never slipped unless I was doing that specific shift. I had noticed a week or two previous to the breakdown that it seemed to have less power. Not horrendously, but it took a pedal to the metal, possibly shifting from O/D to D, to keep it at 55 on a moderate grade hill.

As I pushed the pedal down (in the far left lane of a 3 lane highway) to get up this hill, I felt the truck accelerate and then what I remember hearing is a kind of clunk, then a loss of power and the smell of something burning. The power of my previous acceleration got me to the side of the highway <---- That is an important tidbit of info.

Once I was stopped, I was able to go forward (in any gear but reverse, not sure about neutral), crawling with no rev, by turning the wheel left. If I pushed the pedal, all the engine DID was rev, so still no usable power. If I turned the wheel right, the truck would stop. Note that I'm still on a moderate grade hill on this highway. If I put the shift into reverse, and turned the wheel right, I would be able to move backward. HOWEVER, if the wheel was turned the opposite way, again, the truck would stop.

After doing weeks of intermittent research, I have found problems similar to mine, but none of which described the car still being able to move. Any ideas?

Have you checked your ATF fluid level???

Yes. It was one of the first things checked. The fluid level was where it needed to be.

Also have checked connections leading to/from the transmission. All appear to be secure.

are you saying that turning the steering wheel somehow had an effect on what the transmission did??

@Rhauf: Or so it would appear. I vividly remember only being able to move toward the closest lane of traffic once I lost momentum. The forward motion from that last acceleration carried me to the far right side of the highway, but not close enough to the barrier that my rear bumper was out of the way of oncoming traffic. I had to wait for the incident response people to push me completely off the road.
