I am a fairly new member but have been reading your posts for quite awhile. You folks are a wealth of knowledge and it is greatly appreciated.

I have a 1994 XLT with 186K, A4LD transmission 2wd. This is one that I had posted about before regarding Phoenix reman back in april. The problem i found was that the front pump was gone, not sure if it was them, myself or both. anyway, got a pump from a donor and reinstalled it and it has been working like a charm until yesterday/today while the wife was driving, it started slipping from 2nd to 3rd, in OD it would not upshift like it should have and reverse was acting up. when i ran it through the gears manually all shifted good until shifting from 2nd to drive, then the rpms shot up, it would not engage and just kinds sat there.

i spent a long time last night until 4 in the morning and most of today going through the posts trying to find similar problems, suggestions, possible solutions etc. I adjusted the bands and all worked for a little while, then reverse started to go, then all went gears were going and i was able to limp home just before it basically quit. Now it revs real high and goes real little.

Is this a torque converter problem, valve body that should/needs to be rebuilt, or something else? I read the Frankentranny post, Glaciers rebuild diary and valve body diary, and many other posts. I checked the hose from the modulator as well and there was no fluid coming out. To me, after reading other posts, it seems like the valve body needs rebuilding.

I need to try and find what is wrong before the weekend is up and try to get it repaired so the wife can get to work.

any suggestions and help would be GREAT.

Buy a tranny from the scrapyard and put it on. After use your tranny on floor to rebuild it with a kit on ebay they solkd a complete kit for around 130$ and if you need help i have the ford cd-rom at home with all the specs just contact me.

Thanks for the suggestion, i thought of that and called around all the local yards, the pullapart, which is the cheapest, have had parts removed or taken already, the others will not give a warranty on it because of the known issues with that model, or they want 300-550 for them. at this point i can only get parts from the zone or other parts store. borrowing a friends car for the week so i can try and get the tranny repaired before next weekend when i go out of town. I may have to pull it and do a rebuild again on the floor and get the kit from ebay.

i would rather not have to tear down the whole thing unless absolutely necessary. How can you tell if it is the Torque converter, valve body or needing to do a tear down and rebuild? what puzzles me is that it was working fine and then slipped and gone. of course it could have been happening longer and the wire didn't let me know until yesterday...hmmmm.

anyone suggest what to check? or how to proceed?

anyone suggest where to start logically, tc, valve body, internals????? someone please???

thanks, got the valve body parts on order.
