ABS Acting up...

did a search and didn't find the solution so I'm posting about it with hopes of getting a good answer and possible solution.

1999 4x4 Explorer XL

ABS seems to be malfunctioning. The light is always on. When we bought it recently the cable was unplugged. We plugged it back in, the ABS stays on. And the brakes seem very IFFY when trying to stop both forward and in reverse.

We've replaced the disks in the front, cleaned the sensor still the problem persists. I'm afraid that one of these days the truck just won't stop in time, since this crap happens on any road condition wet or dry.

Any suggestions?

Start by getting your ABS codes read. Go from there.

You also could unplug you battery for 10 min and see if the light still comes one, but get the codes read first.

It could be your wheel sensors are bad.. There are located on your front knuckles and on the rear they are located on the axle housing..

abs won't affect the brakes. it only keeps the wheels from locking. with out it all that will happen is you can lock em up if you stand on the brakes hard enough. I just took mine in for a similar problem. they found water in the electronic control unit and replaced the hydraulice control unit. Very spendy. Hope you don't have the same problem. good luck with it.

Yes, get the codes pulled. You don't really need ABS but it's good to have. I thought disconnecting the battery to erase the codes only worked on OBD I vehicles? I'd be pissed off to buy a vehicle with the ABS bulb unplugged. How dishonest can you get?

Definatly get the codes pulled to see what is wrong with the ABS, you state that the brakes don't seem to work right..? Thats not the ABS, when the light is on, it is completely out of the loop. If your brakes otherwise feel bad or are malfunctioning standard troubleshooting of the brake sytem should find the problem, in my experience, most ABS lights on X's are caused by the rear ABS sensor, on top of the differential. When you pull the codes you get rear speed mismatch code and no signal code for rear...
